I have a Comcast cable internet modem and a Linksys router so that I can connect my laptops and devices through WiFi.

Back when I had DSL, it used to be as easy as unplugging my modem for a little while and bam, I’d have a new IP address when I plugged it back in. But that’s not the case with this cable internet.

What are the steps to get a new IP with my setup?

like your actual IP address? thats a Comcast designation to you like your phone number or street address. if you mean you device IP like 192.168.1.150 , you can change that via your router. to 192.168.1.26

I don’t know... I want to get around a ban.

VPN or ask Comcast to issue you a new number.

Why in the hell would you care what your IP is?

Call Comcast and ask for another one. Just make up a story about it being blacklisted from some work sites for some reason. They'll probably do it once for you.

Have to get Comcast to change it. Not sure if they will. Could use a VPN to get around the ban.

That may or may not work. Many sites fingerprint your browser too, which has your MAC address and other such details. A VPN might help.

Personally I think the most effective solution is posting from a VM. You probably don't even have to install Tor or the like. If you get banned just shut down the VM, create a new one, and you're good.

His public IP isnt tied to anything inside his network. Only the ISP can change that. Any VM he spins up will show coming from the same IP.....

I agree with the other poster..This is only going to reflect a change in your internal IP, which hopefully isn't being broadcasted anyway

Browser doesn't publish your MAC address. Also, I'm guessing you confused VM with VPN later in your message, because posting from a VM that isn't running a VPN won't help.

I should be more clear - I wasn't referring to posting from a VM inside my network. I meant something like this:

1. Contract with one of the major (or minor) cloud providers like Azure, AWS, etc. to get a VM.

2. Create and maintain VM's there.

If I log into a VM hosted by AWS, how is my own machine compromised?

Bear in mind I'm not talking about dodging governments that can issue subpoenas - just dodging social media bans.

Depends on how long your ISP's DHCP lease time is and if they use MAC sticky or not. Most likely if you leave your router unplugged for 24 hours you'll get a new IP.

Also get a VPN.

I'm still confused as hell.

Back in the day when I had a DSL modem, if I got banned from a forum or something, all I had to do was leave my modem and router unplugged for a little while, clear all the cookies and everything on my browser, and when I'd plug in the modem and router again I'd have a new IP and could create a new account without getting banned.

Now I have cable internet. Is cable different from DSL as far as how easy it is to get a new IP?
