I opened an excel file and start working on it for a different project. After a bit I decided I needed to save the file. Went to the top and hit the save button instead of save as. Is there somewhere I can go or something I can do to get the file prior to hitting save? Or am I S-O-L for not doing a save as first?

TIA

You're screwed unless you have a backup. In the future, if you make a duplicate of a file you want to backup, change the file extension to .bak instead of the file type your using.

So, if you have a file named techboard.xlsx, make a copy in a backup folder or same working folder and name it techboard.bak, then if you need to use it just change the file extension back. This way, you never have to worry about opening the backup file by double clicking it in the file manager.

What version of Excel? You might be able to recover a prior version.

Thanks.

As soon as I hit the save icon I knew I was screwed was just hoping for something easy. I typically do a save as any time I open a file to use as a base for a new file but didn't do it this time as I was in a hurry. I have a pdf of the original so I can recreate the original, just will take time I was trying to save.

Right click -> restore previous version should be available if you are on w7 or later

Edit

I think they turned off auto backup of previous versions in w8 so you may still be SOL depending on your OS.

It's been many years since I used Excel, so these other guys may have a better suggestion. You could always search "restore previous file" (or version) or something similar in the Excel help section or on the Microsoft website.
