My bedroom is opposite of where my modem/router is located. What do I need to put in my bedroom to increase signal there? I have tried the netgear powerline and did not see an improvement. Im open to any reasonably priced options....dont want to spend more than $150 or so
eta:LINK would this work?

I've never used a TPLink range extender so I can't say much about it, but Netgear has never let me down.
Solid cheaper option
More expensive, but extremely reliable

what router are you using now?
the asus have a 'access point' mode where you can buy a standard router & extend your range that way for well under $150.
its as easy as launching the admin UI and going here:

Get the router closer.
I had the same issue and left my modem/desktop where it was at and ran 100ft ethernet cables back and forth to the router and placed the router in the center of the house up high on top of the entertainment center.
Signal quality was dramatically improved at the perimeter of the house.
If the house is too big for that then run an ethernet cable to a second router. Wireless only routers as a means of extending the network slow down the whole network.

that looks like it might do the trick, and amazon will take it back if it don't...

Before you throw any money at the problem try adjusting the power output on the router. Or changing the band on the receiver to 5GHz only. I was having slow connections (jittery youtube and plex) in my bedroom and tweaked the settings of the router and wifi card in the bedroom and that did the trick.

Can I use an old linksys router as an access point through my new Asus wireless or will it need to be hardwired?

I had the same problem when we bought a Roku for my daughter's room. Streaming in there was next to impossible. We purchased a Netgear range extender (I believe the cheaper option MoroccoMole posted) and it works perfectly now. No lag or buffering at all. Setup on the range extender was very simple as well.
