HD Antenna
Posted by Canvasback on 1/27/19 at 5:10 pm00
Looking to put an antenna in the attic to feed all tv’s in the house. Any recommendations on the best antenna to purchase?

I have the old school big metal tubes hanging in my attic with a booster works perfectly.

How far away are you from the stations?

If I put it in the center of the attic it will be roughy 35 feet from the furthest tv.
That’s were the splitter for all the coax cables to me tv’s is located. Was just going to hook the antenna to that to feedback all tv’s. Will that work?

He meant how far away are you from the local tv stations in your area. This will strongly dictate what kind of antenna you need. If you aren’t far you can go cheaper, further away and you’ll have to go a little bigger.
There’s the Winegard app you can download to find out how far and in what directions. Or you can just go to FCC.gov to find out.

After looking on that link I’m 20-30 miles from the top stations.

If it's in the attic you need to decide if you can swivel it for different broadcast locations for BR or Laffy stations.
Plus you have to realize it's not an HD antenna, it's just an antenna that receives the signal from the local stations, and not all station signals are equal.

I had trouble tryin to run multiple TVs off one HD antenna so I just got one for each TV. I believe the signal gets diluted with 2+ TVs.
? - Was I just imaging it?

If you’re really 30 miles out, I would honestly run to Walmart and pick up a Mohu Leaf and try that out. Worst case scenario if it doesn’t work out you can return it...it’s walmart.
I had one in a window hanging by suction cups when I lived in Florida and I was picking up a Station 50 miles in Mobile.
No matter what you get though, make sure it has an amplifier. You will notice a drastic difference in reception strength.

I have had luck with this getting stations from 50-70 miles and it is omnidirectional so no need to aim.

You should have plenty of options and a single antenna should feed your TVs properly (may need a booster if it doesn't come with one). make sure to use quality splitters AND RG-6. If there is any old, poor coax it will severely degrade the signal.

Gonna try to piggyback off this thread a little bit, id love to cut the cord but my problem is getting the local channels. The affiliates where I live don’t have agreements with the streaming providers so an anteena is the only way for me to get them. I am roughly 90-100 miles from these stations. I’ve seen some antennas advertise that they can reach 125 miles but all the websites I have checked basically say I’m screwd, is there any antenna and booster or whatever that I could buy to make this doable? I’d spend whatever it took

You should be fine. Last year I brought a tv and antenna to our camp in North La. We are dead center between Shreveport and Monroe and could pick up stations from both places about 50 miles away.

I don't consider myself an expert, just using my own personal experience to help others...but I think you're out of luck. If you were able to somehow build a monster of a tower 50+ ft up, you would still have a tough time picking up receptions with any sort of reliability.
Hopefully someone in your situation can come behind me though and tell you I am full of it.

I am about +/-50 miles from the stations. Only problem I run into is my metal roof which is a PIA for placement in my attic.

Well, thanks for the answer anyways

I’ve pretty much looked into the longest range antennas I could find through google/Amazon though that one claims 150 miles which is the furthest I’ve seen thus far. If that claim is true then that’s exactly what I’ll get but idk how to attempt to verifiy without just buying the thing
I have a number to call with some people and was gonna talk to them about it as soon as work slacks off a bit

Buy it and try it. If it doesn't work then ship it back. Its Amazon!
