Does the number of DOCSIS channels affect anything except total download speed? Any downside to reducing number of channels when switching modems if the download speed is still above my speed cap?

I am looking to buy a modem to replace the one I am renting from Comcast (the rented router has locked down DNS settings). The one I am renting is a TG1682G telephony/modem/router which has 24x8 channels. There are much cheaper options to purchase that would still be above my speedcap (150) but the number of channels is lower. 16x4, 8x4, etc. (I am not concerned with WiFi since I am using a router after the modem.)

I was trying to research to find out if the number of channels had any affect other than total data transfer rate capability, e.g. multiple devices downloading at once, etc. I didn't find anything except explanations of channel bonding for increasing max download rate.

TIA

AFAIK it doesn't affect anything else. As long as the modem is capable of faster speeds than your service, you're good.

Consider buying the extra channels for future proofing. You never know when they will up the speed for your current package.

^^^ This is good advice. I learned this from experience, and then purchased a modem with more channels and was able to double my speed when it became available.

I had an older modem for 200mbps and upgraded to 300. I didn't have enough channels and Cox told me that. They actually sent me a free 32 channel modem for free with no rental charges or changing my bill. I was legit surprised

The opposite happened for me. Comcast said that my Docsis 3.0 modem will not work for their 400mbps speeds. They said that I either need to buy a 3.1 modem or rent their gateway......

DOCSIS modems come in different speed capabilities. I think the limit for the DOCSIS standard is around 1000 mps download. You just need a better DOCSIS 3 modem, or a 3.1. I have an Arris DG2460 that 24 channels bought from Cox a couple of years ago. You can pick it up for around 50 bucks online these days. Save the 9.99 rental fee.
