Cheapest Mobile Plan for Teenager
Posted by brickyard on 2/1/19 at 1:29 pm00
We got a phone for my son when he goes out. It's not 'his' phone, so it won't be used much. What is the cheapest route to go? It's a Verizon phone. Talked to Verizon and it's 40 bucks which seems high, but I'll admit that I'm out of touch. Are there better options out there? Pay as you go? Tracphone?
Any help would be appreciated.

In the same boat. I bought my kids a gophone a year ago to watch movies and use hangouts, snapchat with friends etc. Never activated it with a sim card. Right before Christmas we tried Mint and coverage sucked! We got a tracfone sim card last week and it is a lot better. $15/mo will do for now.

Mint wasn’t cheaper than freedompop I had that too
Whistle Out website does a pretty good job of listing carrier options. I used Sprint for years. Moved to Tello which uses the Sprint Network at $14 a month 2 years ago and can’t tell the difference. Some of the MVNO’s out there are pretty decent.
Of course if you have to have unlimited data, the plans will be much pricier. I have 1 gig of 4g then it defaults to 2g, so no overages, and it’s enough for me. I WiFi hop mostly...almost everywhere has WiFi available now. I’m getting ready to reduce the kids plans to probably 2 gb and they can learn to take advantage of WiFi or have slow data. Plans have just gotten ridiculously expensive especially when you average in the cost of decent devices.

Just got my son TotalWireless for an older Verizon Phone. Seems to be good. $35 for unlimited phone/text and 5 GB of data. Much cheaper than what I am paying now through Verizon. Going to see how it works for a couple months and may make the change myself. TotalWireless is on Verizon Network which we have been pleased with coverage.
This got me thinking if I was a teenager today I’d ask for a flip phone. The last think I’d ever ask for was my freedom to be taken away by some app where my mom can see my car and how fast I went.
