Apple products aren’t meant to last a lifetime. The latest iPhone 6s, or even the highly anticipated iPhone 7, will only last for three years tops.

Complete bullshite, imo.

Who really keeps a phone for more than 2-3 years?

The phones are designed with the majority in mind.

If Apple didn't create planned obsolescence, I'd keep mine until it didn't work anymore. I don't need the "newest" thing every few years.

They're answering a question and you say they're screwing you. You can use the phone/computer/watch as long as you want. They're telling you the average people do.

i'm not sure the article says what you think it says.

quote:

Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for OS X and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices.” Apple did not take into consideration the recycling or resale of devices in their assessment.

quote:

The latest software, iOS9, has been a game-changer for Apple users. The software still supports iPhone 4s, which was released in 2011.

None of this has anything to do with how long a product is supposed to last, just how long people are actually using them. the two year thing is likely due to the carriers all having 2 year contracts until very recently. people have basically been trained to get a new phone every 2 years. there used to be a problem with software support in iphones, but as shown here, now phones from 5 years ago are supported in new updates. that is much longer than the average user is keeping their phone.

Nothing lasts a lifetime, especially electronic products. This isn't limited to Apple.

My mom is still using her iPhone 4 and it works fine.

Ok, let's say that I'm still using my iPhone 4s. They are still saying that continued updates will eventually force me to switch. Why?

iPhones are ridiculously fragile. Why?

Battery life starts to go after a few years, too. Why?

I know the answer to all of these, and the answer is the same for each. Doesn't mean that it's fair, though.

you understand EVERY tech company does this, not just Apple right? planned obsolescence is necessary because its not cost efficient to code for and support multiple gens of hardware.

huh? they don't update all models because at some point it becomes absurd to update antiquated technology that can't even run the new version of the software. this same idea rings true for pc's, albeit on a longer time frame due to decreased innovation.

it's fragile because it's a powerful computer made of glass and aluminum, and it is small enough to carry in your pocket. all of the top tier phones are fragile. to make it not fragile will increase its size and be detrimental to its appearance.

battery life starts to go because it's a damn battery they all lose their life over time. you replace your car battery, right? and you probably use it much less than you use your phone.

none of this is about fairness. this is reality. apple wants to make money, yes. that's capitalism. but people keep coming back because they sell a good product at (apparently) a fair price. you get 2 years out of a new phone then sell it for $2-300. that's how it is. you don't like it? get a tracfone.

Thank you.

biggest differnece is that you can still use an old OS/device without the updates/packages...unless they are forced upon you. apple (and i presume other companies, but not all) forces their phones to upgrade, so it's more like forced, rather than planned, obsolescence

They don't force the upgrades, they just nag you about it until you do.

You're an Apple guy, right? I've always owned Android, but I'm tired of AT&T carrying the same two shitty Android brands.

Tell me about Apple, specifically the SE. Worth it? I love the smaller size.

they dont magically quit working one day.
you can use your phone as long as the cell carrier supports it.
you can still use XP if you want, you just cant use MSE or IE11 with it or get security updates. it isnt forced.
