Basically have a huge backporch with 6 outdoor speakers. Just want stereo only. Do I need to purchase a regular receiver, a selector, or some sort of gadget? Not sure what I need to purchase for this. Again 6 outdoor speakers in STEREO only used for music and watching TV. Do not need surround. Help!

Can I just buy a 7.2 or higher receiver and plug them for surround and just use the stereo only mode and do the same thing?

Or a speaker selector with impendance matching along with a stereo receiver. The speakers should all be homerunned to the speaker selector. DO NOT wire the speakers in series (daisy chained).

Do you have any other music source in the house?

Yes. I have 7.2 inside. I was gonna add another receiver specifically for the outside. Klipsch 650's for the outside

How do you listen to music now? Local FM...Spotify or pandora?

I have a 9.1 system for my main tv area but the rest of the house is run off sonos connect amp boxes. Have a connect on my 9.1 receiver. So I’m bias but I just like the system...works well, sounds good, and a wireless sub on the back porch adds a lot to the music experience outside.

So if it were me I’d be looking at that. A connect amp can play 4 speakers....idk if it can do 6 you would have to see how low the amps are stable with as far as ohms. You can do a parallel/series wire job...might be like 6-6ohms after. Get the new sonos amp that does 125w vs the older one at 55w. Might be enough...those Klipsch 650 Have a real high sensitivity.

No! Never, ever wire speakers in series unless it’s a 70 volt system. Bad advice. Always home run speaker cabling.

Not just series. A combo of parallel then series.

Idk if those connect amps are 4ohm stable tho that’s why I said one would have to look into it.

The 2 stacks on 12’s are wired like that. Four 4ohm single voice coils wired to present a single 4ohm load each. The amp I’m running them with is stable to 4ohms.

Do far over my head for sure with that diagram. I just need something simple. If the sonos amp can only power 4 thats gonna leave me 2 short. It would probably be cheaper just to be a onkyo receiver and do it that way.

Yea sorry I got carried away. The norm is 4 speakers on them...never looked to see if anyone ran more or lower ohms.

Another reciever would likely be cheaper just don’t know what you use for music or if that would be built in to that reciever. Also where is the reciever...inside or outside. Controlling the music and volume with that reciever if it’s inside. Those are all other things to consider. That’s why I like sonos stuff...I use my phone to control it all from anywhere.

Its inside and can control it with an app if need be. I stream pandora, amazon music, and spotify and they all pick up my inside onkyo through the app or I can directly access it through the speaker system. Thanks for the info.

My ONLY concern would be a sub. Adding one adds that boost but im not jamming at 100 watts per speaker but that sub makes a nice addition.

So it sounds like a reciever would work well...maybe not for the sub. That’s another reason I like sonos. While it’s all spendy they have a wireless sub. I have one on my back porch and run 4 def tec speakers (off 2 sonos amps so I can control the volume independently) but I could run it off 1. The sub connects to the sonos network and boom put it anywhere you have power. Protect it from water and the sun. I have mine tucked in a corner behind a bourbon barrel. The difference it makes (to me) is worth it...any sub will be.

If still doing reciever, how far is it from the back porch. SVS (online company) makes a solid wireless sub signal option. I use one now for the 18s behind my sofa. You could then get a powered sub and link it wirelessly.

This is assuming you can not run a wire to the back porch. If you have access you could build a shelf up close to the ceiling to put the sub on and pop out your sub single wire to connnect to the reciever inside. Now it’s protected from the elements as well.

Wife hates the sub placement inside the house right now because I cant run a wire that long so its in the shelving system. I would love to find a wireless to work with my onkyo receiver inside.

As far as the outside, I can take the klipsch I have now and just run a long line inside and build something to house it on the outside.

SVS = WAF

Wife acceptance factor

I tried the rocket fish ones fromBest Buy with dismal results. I was pretty mad because my electricians were supposed to leave a empty conduit in the slab so I could pass wires to hook up subs behind my sofa… But they did not.

Those SVS adapters have worked 100% perfectly. Not sure how far it can go but pretty sure you can return them if not.

Speakers are the 1 thing I told the wife that will trump all. I’ll do my best to make it so she can make it “pretty” but I have to like how it sounds first and formost.

So there’s this...the wife hates it because of the volume...so that means it’s just right

I told her we can make it not so frat house and turn it into a bench seat. It’s in the main gathering area so it will get good use.

So how does this attach? Again over my head. Looking at the pictures, one attaches to the back of the receiver in the subwoofer spot. The other attaches to my powered sub somewhere in the living room (probably less that 20 feet from sub to receiver) and thats it?

I would be sleeping at your house if I had that setup in my house

Yes it comes with 2 boxes with obnoxious bright blue LEDs… Electrical tape but I digress

Remove the wire that goes between your receiver and the sub. The transmitter box plugs into the onkyo receiver in the same RCA plug that the wire was before. That transmitter box also has a power wire that plugs in to an outlet. Take note that power wire does not snap into the transmitter box very well so don’t force it looking for it to click in. Where the wire was plugged into the sub is where you will plug the supplied RCA wires from the receiver box into the sub. That receiver box has a power plug as well just like the transmitter box. That is what you can see in my pic.

Plug them in and they should automatically link with a solid blue light. Mine are maybe 20 to 20 feet apart, the transmitter portion is in a closet under my stairs with a closed door...no issue.

I just set these up a cpl months ago and absolutely love it. Haven’t fine tuned anything but it makes me smile bigly.

I don’t know if you ran something called Audyssey to get all your speaker levels matched up but you will have to run it again. With the sub being wireless it adds some delay so it will have to be accounted for and Audyssey should get it going.

Ordered. I can run setup again. So my outdoor question results in an inside solution! Thanks. Will report back with results along with wife results.

never know where the answer lies.

I have a feeling it will work out well tho. I was not optimistic to be honest because the RF ones had this awful popping sound with the bass no matter what I did. So when I pulled the plate that was supposed to be hiding my empty conduit under the slab, and I saw they ran the romex power through it I came unglued

SVS been around and so glad they made those wireless units. The cylinders in my garage pics are from them about 19 years ago. They are not hooked up now...playing with the JBLs for now. Best Buy sale...$29 each ($100 off each)...grabbed 16 of them for you know...projects
