2 year old Vizio 50" 4K TV goes out a week after black Friday
I have 2 year old Vizio 4K TV 50" ($800 at the time). Watching the SEC championship game this past Saturday and the picture starts to go in and out. It will show a good image for 5 seconds then it will show two images and shake for a couple seconds. Rinse and repeat. I called Vizio.. They told me to turn the TV off, unplug, and hold the power button for 5 seconds. When that didn't work all they said is there is noting they can do and the TV needs to be replaced.

I wish this would have happened a week ago so I could have gotten a black Friday deal.

Question:

Is there anything I can do to fix it? Anywhere around town that would be worth taking it to?

Is there another "sale" time to buy a TV or are the prices as low as I'll find them now?

How are the TCL quality?

Best Buy has the 49" LG 1080 TV for $350 right now.

Between that and the Insignia or Toshiba 4K 50" For $375 but I feel like I am playing with fire again getting one of those brands.

Buy a warranty through Squaretrade next time or consider your TV disposable. Extended warranty saved me twice. Another one died after a year and a half. Lesson learned.

Costco will give you a second year warranty through them for free.

So far, outstanding. I'll probably keep buying more of them when I need new TVs

I am against extended warranties. It is a gamble I take, but the odds are against it being worth the money. It would have helped me here, but that is another argument.

So will my Chase CC, but it is just out of the 2 year window.

TCL panels are a great bargain BUT their statistical reliability is slightly below Vizio. Given they are relatively new the numbers may be skewed toward due to the expected issues when they first started selling panels.

Vizio, unfortunately, has been showing more issues of late and it is off my recommendation list unless it is for a secondary set that doesn't see much use. The more budget-minded sets I recommend are Hisense which not only are proving to be very reliable but in general have better picture than the TCLs, people really love the price and features (like Roku) on the TCLs.

This is indeed the best time to buy until the next Black Friday season. Especially this time of year I would suggest a Sony, Samsung or LG but they will cost a little more (not much on a 50" set) for the same quality picture as a TCL, Vizio or Hisense, especially if this is your primary set you watch.

My sources are stupid amounts of hours on AVscience forums and Consumer Reports which mirrors what I see on AVS, the CR link is behind a pay wall but here you go:

Haier
3%
Insignia
4%
Sanyo
4%
Toshiba
4%
Philips
4%
Sony
4%
Hisense
5%
Element
5%
Samsung
5%
RCA
5%
LG
5%
Hitachi
5%
Sharp
6%
Magnavox
6%
Vizio
7%
Seiki
8%
TCL
8%
Westinghouse
10%

CR Link

Keep in mind most all brands are reasonably reliable now but some are worse than others and some brands tend to be much more expensive to fix the problems they have. For example, I always loved recommending Vizio to family and friends while not the best panels most people don't pay for the best panels but their power supplies have been frying at an unusually high pace the last year or so. It is hard to nail down the percentages from anecdotal info but it is enough it has shifted me to Hisense which seems to have excellent reliability and the quality is better than TCL. In the end it is a crap shoot and TVs are built as disposable compared to the CRT years, I just replaced some secondary panels in the house for 4K and HDR capability, the ones that were replaced were Panasonic and Samsung plasma panels which had been going for 10-11 years but I don't expect to get that much life out of the Sony panels I replaced them with.
