He’s a better player than he’s given credit for. At the very least he’s still an upgrade given the absolute state of LB, but I think he’s got the potential to be a really important long term signing. His form dipped in the second half of last season but was really strong the first half. While I’m not out of my mind with excitement, I do think it’s a signing that moves us forward.

Romano says Thiago Silva has signed his contract already. Havertz soon.

I love the fact that promising young players are coming here even if that means they join the youth team or loan army. The demonstration of a legitimate path to the first team has revitalized the entire machine. We should have been transfer banned a lot sooner.

What’s the point of signing Sarr and then loaning him out?

They think he has talent, but he's not more ready to help Chelsea win this year than Dave, Rudiger, Tomori, Zouma and Thiago Silva.

as said above, also it's just good business. you either get a stater/squad player for free or sell him on for nothing but profit if it doesnt work out.

chelsea have to the close the income cap/FFP gap with the other top clubs through player sales. hence the loan army. sponsorships, matchday revenue, and regular UCL havent kept the pace.

The inflated transfer market lends even more credence to the loan army model. We broke the world record transfer fee on Nando not so very long ago. Now that sum is closer to bargain basement pricing in the current market. Teams can’t pay 100M plus for every starter, they have to supplement with youth development and shrewd transfer dealings based more on future promise than immediate return. The fact that frank has the stones to prioritize this (albeit helped somewhat by the transfer ban) especially at a club like Chelsea, will ultimately strengthen the side. Sarri was trying to get to the next season, whereas frank is trying to get to the next decade. I think he just might.

That's because Frank knows he's being afforded patience no Chelsea manager has ever or will ever get. Frank could've finished 15th last year, and 50% of our fan base would've been in favor of keeping him.

with the inevitable changes to loan quotas coming and no movement in the near future on the new stadium, club's gonna have to be real creative or just serious reduce the number of whiffs.

i think that also plays a part in most of theses targets being in the age range where they retain alot of resale value.

between Roman, Marina, whoever else, itd be fascinating to know the details of who was pushing to bring in Petr and Frank and switch gears to focus on long term planning.

Whatever the catalyst, I’m just glad it’s happening. Long may it continue. I think the club is onto something here though. Exciting times ahead.

How'd he do overall this year? Pretty sure I only watched one Ligue 1 match. I thought he was solid in the Champions League though.

He’s lost a step but he’s still a productive player and leader. There was some controversy over Leonardo deciding not to renew his contract, but I get it given the push to clear some of the older guys off the wage bill. Will be tough to see him in another uniform but wish him all the best.
