The Netherlands learned quickly that legalizing hard narcotics only made the proliferation worse.

Not exactly. It's not that they created more demand for narcotics in the marketplace, but that they eased the supply restrictions. The demand came from all over Europe (and America) to the legal supply.

I can guarantee you that I could have narcotics in my south Louisiana home before kickoff tonight if I wanted to. The supply is already out there. I submit to you that given such ready supply, for the most part those who would take it, already do.

This. But we must NOT have govt. sponsored programs for rehab. They need to actually die in the gutters to send a lesson to the children.

Harsh? Perhaps.

I like it.

Yes, exactly. I've been there. I've seen it with my own eyes. Not even the usually permissive Dutch could stomach seeing passed out junkies every 50 feet in their downtown parks, with needles still sticking in the arms of some of them. It made me want to puke.

I know you're not that stupid to believe that.

Why is incarcerating those who do drugs a success? What are we doing for them? For us? Drugs are going to ruin your life, so if we catch you, we're going to ruin your life?

Not being a hot button issue for me, I am trying to form an opinion on the drug legalization topic. The just reported death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman from a heroin overdose has me wondering: Would easier access to narcotics increase the number of ODs annually?

I honestly have no idea

How many people are in prison solely for drug use? I realize if you look at the stats there are people in prison with that charge but I'd wager that most of them were arrested for another crime but had drugs in their possession so that charge was tacked on. I think the incarceration argument is bullshite.

I can go along with making it legal to consume drugs but selling them should carry a sharp penalty.
