Not being a hot button issue for me, I am trying to form an opinion on the drug legalization topic. The just reported death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman from a heroin overdose has me wondering: Would easier access to narcotics increase the number of ODs annually?

Empirically, the decrminilization of drugs in countries has led to a decrease in drug abuse.

I believe all the statistics you'll see will support a call for drug legalization as there really isn't any benefit to our current system.

I would imagine that it would for a short time but it would quickly level off I think and then decrease from there.

No! It would not increase the frequency of overdoses, but it would surely decrease the amount of violence that its illegal trade creates at the momment.

Don't know the answer but it doesn't matter. The legalization of heroine will never happen. I think the number of deaths from overdose is actually higher in non-elicit prescription drugs and they are already legal. Not sure how the overdoses break out as to whether the prescription drugs are obtained legally or illegally though.

Do you have a good source for that, a definitive study? I'd like to read it.

Even if he is wrong, why should the state intervene to stop people from killing themselves by using drugs?

If they just kill themselves, I'm all for it. Unfortunately, they don't just kill themselves. And that fact makes it a societal problem.

Sure. Still support legalization.

This. But we must NOT have govt. sponsored programs for rehab. They need to actually die in the gutters to send a lesson to the children.

Harsh? Perhaps.

The State has an obligation to protect us, even from ourselves. You know that 14th warning sticker on your kids bike? That's mine. I made that happen. I'm kind of a big deal. :jump2:

Bull shite!!!! you are just looking for excuses for the state to project its force.
Let people kill themselves if they wish, the state should just be a tiny entity in an ideal world.

So what if they kill themselves by way of a head on collision? Someone else has be coming the other direction for a head on collision to occur.

You know what you are saying is just an excuse to get big goverment involved, most druggies would likely die in their home from an overdose.

Probably more just because you'll have an overall increase in users.

Less percentage-wise (of all users) because they wouldn't have to worry about being prosecuted for seeking help/being stigmaitized by the community. Also education on said drugs would be more realistic.
