Why is it such a hassle to visit a military base now?

I tried visiting the museum at pensacola naval base today.

I used to go all the time as a kid. There’s an IMAX theater and all kinds of cool stuff (I’m sure many here have been).

They require the REAL ID (not just a regular state driver’s license) and the past two years we’ve been turned away because the museum was “at capacity”.

Is this common now at all bases or is this just since pensacola had that shooting?

because the museum is being used for the drag queen shows for the kids

real IDs have been required for a very long time, i think it started after 9/11

Do you think the public and anyone who wants should have free unrestricted access to a military base?

Oh wow. You’re stationed there?

I used to love the museum. I never heard of them having a capacity requirement back then.

I took a wrong turn and the sentry seemed ready to leap on my car lol.

My parents used to get in without them. About 10 years ago.

I went and got a real ID just to visit there.

Without one you have to have your original birth certificate, state DL, and SS card for entry.

Just curious about the tightened security requirements.

And this one does happen to have a museum for the public.

I’m not sure it was ever “at capacity “ once the Saudi pilot that was there training went on his rampage then Covid, they’ve used that to keep everything locked down. Until a couple of weeks ago you had to have DoD clearance or escort to get on the base just to get to the museum. I believe that has changed now and with the proper ID you can get back to the museum.

They hate native born Americans that are not under their control.

I think the capacity and reduced hours are still fallout from Covid. Used to be you just drive up and say you’re headed to the museum and roll on in. But I would guess there’s a chance of you looked into real ID it probably got pushed by some former retired federal official who got a big consulting gig/started a company and got it passed

The museum just opened back up to the public from the shooting on base a few years ago. Then COVID.

We were escorted on base a few months ago by a friend. He had to physically drive my truck on the base.

But glad it finally opened again. It is a nice spot to visit.

Some states are considered REAL IDs. If there is a yellow/white star in the upper right hand corner of the ID it is considered REAL. Or at least that's my understanding.

Military bases are more difficult to get into because they are trying to avoid attacks. The Pensacola attack was a wake up.

Most bases have always been difficult to get on for OPSEC reasons. Most I was ever stationed at you had to be sponsored to come on.

The issue is most museums were built inside the security zone of the base (past the gate)... Pre 9/11 most bases did not even have anyone at the gate...

I know they moved the Infantry Museum at Fort Benning several years back. It was old and needed updating anyway but when they did move it they moved it outside the gate (still technically on post) so the general public could access it AND they hold most of their graduations there now...

I was stationed at Barksdale from ‘69- ‘73. Tried to go to the museum at Barksdale in Bossier City a couple on months ago.
Had two picture IDs verifying I was a Veteran and a copy of my DD 214 on my phone.
Told the guard at the shack I was stationed there back then.
Wouldn’t let me in. Turned me around at the gate. Guy was a dick about it.
