We already had mass murders and shootout with those mentioned. In 1989 Patrick Purdy massacred school children with an Ak as most notorious. As far as why you see ar15s is the fact that the ar15 has assumed the title of number one platform in America with 1/4 rifles being sold new are ar15s. In 2010 the NSSF found that 13.7 million people went hunting that year BUT over 9 million shot ar15s that year.

The most common platform typically will be commonly used. Where that changes is in overall homicides. Rifles of all calibers number less than 400 while handguns number around 9000.

Media hysteria and leftist prohibitionist are trying to garner support to ban the most common platform in the US. If they can do that, they can gut the 2A. Already you can see people talking about hunting only(as usual) with maybe a revolver.
