The Prime Minister of Australia accused Facebook of believing it is ‘bigger than the government’ after the tech company blocked all news from its social media platform in the country before parliament debates whether it should be forced to pay for content produced by third party media outlets.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison blasted Facebook and declared that big tech ‘think…that the rules should not apply to them’.

Reports indicate that as well as blocking news, Facebook in Australia has prevented the sharing of some government information, including emergency services updates on Covid, fires, and help for victims of domestic violence.

Morrison noted that “Facebook’s actions to unfriend Australia today, cutting off essential information services on health and emergency services, were as arrogant as they were disappointing.”

“They may be changing the world, but that doesn’t mean they run it,” the PM urged, adding “We will not be intimidated by BigTech seeking to pressure our Parliament.”

Big Tech is going to need to be put down soon the same way Carnegie Steel and Standard Oil were 100 years ago.

Uhhhh...it is bigger than government. And the left will be happy to remind you that private companies, especially tech companies, can do what they want as long as they have the correct politics.

I know people hate Facebook, but I don't really see a problem with this. The Australian government wants to force them to pay news sites for articles people share. Rather than paying for actions their users take, they've simply stopped those actions from happening.

I hate facebook, and I honestly don't know all of the details of this, but basically Australia passed a dumb law that requires paying sites to link to them.

If our swamprat politicians here passed a law saying you had to pay our garbage "journalists" just to link to them I think I might actually side with facebook.

ETA: How much do you think Chicken should owe EpochTimes for you linking to them in this thread? If you were Chicken and did owe that money, wouldn't it be reasonable to start restricting links to certain sites? This was a natural consequence of passing a dumb law like that.

If today's dems were around 100 years ago:

Why don't you just build your own oil company.

Ok, but this doesn't just apply to facebook. It applies all over in Australia. The Prime Minister is just using facebook as a scapegoat here. This same Prime Minister also pushed for laws requiring the government to have backdoors into encryption.

If we're going to have a discussion about whether facebook thinks they're bigger than the government, the previous Prime Minister (also from the Liberal Party) said of encryption, "The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia"

So yeah. The Australian liberals are complaining that facebook thinks it's bigger than government, meanwhile the Liberal government literally thinks they can defy the laws of mathematics.

This guy gets it. This isn't on Facebook, it's all on the dumbass Aussies, who think Facebook should have to pay them if someone posts a link to news about Australia.

I hate Zuckerberg as much as the next guy, but if the government is going to bill them for certain content it's reasonable for them to block that content.

I mean, I get it...but we can't ignore the fact that Facebook showed that it pretty much has enough power to essentially silence an entire continent.

Australian government is retarded, but holy shite do we need to kill Facebook

Certainly they can choose to block Australia from site . But just any country Australia has the right to determine what they want . And as far as Facebook is concerned I hope Australia chooses to up the ante and restrict Facebook from the entire country

If Facebook weren't allowing users to post basically the entire article when they post the link this wouldn't be an issue.

For a company that steals and monetizes data without user consent, it's a bit hypocritical to whine when they are caught and held to account.

Why the shite should Facebook pay for 3rd party content being shared on their platform?

That's nonsense.

Australian government crying about this is batshit crazy. You want a company to pay you money for something. That company has a choice and has chosen not to do so. That's it, that's the issue.

They are bypassing pay walls. End of argument.

They've begun restricting the content, so again, why should they be forced to only have the option to pay and not have the option to restrict the content?

Simple. They are a platform, not a publisher...or so they claim.
