Why is anyone who makes less than $20 an hour at work right now?

Don't you get disqualified for unemployment if you turn down work?

Those people typically aren’t at work right now.

But if they have a call from their employer asking them to return and they opt to remain on the couch eating chips, they should have their unemployment checks cut off.

I think that millions who make less than $20 are suggests that your understanding of the amount they'd get if they quit their job is faulty.

You can’t just quit a job and get unemployment. As long as your employer is still offering employment, you can’t receive unemployment

Why do people buy groceries for food they aren't going to eat until they are hungry at a later time?

I don’t know how you keep track of 30M cases and verify them.

It’s too much.

Some would say it's out of a sense of obligation to work.

While that has merit, it does put low wage work in jeopardy.

I make less and want to go back to work. It’s not the money but what the money will be if I keep working learning climbing the ladder. I took a pay cut because I like the company. Money isn’t everything to everybody.

The employer who pays part of the unemployment will turn them in if they decline work so as to not have to pay for someone not to work.

Luckily i still have my job making well over that. But I’m not sure what my future holds since oil/gas is in limbo.

But, if i did lose my job. I would easily take a job making 20 or less per hour if that was all i could find. While everyone is on the government tit, i would be jockeying to be next in line to move up into corporate. That’s the problem with people who think about now vs. the next 10 years.

Did you all miss the CARE act that said you could stay home due to COVID and collect unemployment +$600?

Because in some states you can't just quit your job and start watching the checks roll in. They actually enforce the rules that state you can't collect unemployment if you voluntarily quit your job (except for rare cases, such as quitting in order to avoid doing something illegal like cooking the books).

So many reasons a person can quit and draw under cares act. Any predicting co morbidity, elder person in home, kid at home due to school closure...this thread shows most don’t know this.

Well. People who have this mindset are people who have conceded that they will never be worth more than $20 an hour. This is the pinnacle. That is exactly the mindset that UBI proponents want “citizens” to have.
