Why haven't all the "Dreamers" applied and gotten citizenship?

If they are so valuable to our workforce and it will be devastating if they leave why not take the steps to stay here legally? They had the time and capability.

Because once you become a citizen the amount of benefits you get from the government drops drastically....

Obviously not valuable enough to the work force to get sponsored.
That and they don't want to risk going back to the motherland to wait their turn in line.

They are afforded non-enforcement of deportation statutes despite being an illegal immigrant. How many citizens are given freedom to do something that would have them removed from the country?
Other than that, they don't get more benefits compared to legal citizens, often times fewer benefits. However the benefit given above is extraordinarily substantial.

They would if they could.
The common misconception that you and many others share is that anyone can just apply for citizenship just like that. In most instances the first step of citizenship is getting a green card. In order to get a green card you have to have either an employer who is sponsoring you or you need to have a family-based sponsorship. The additional requirement is you either need to be legally present in the country while you're applying for a green card, or you have never been out of status, or you need to be outside the country. Most dreamers can't satisfy this requirement.
Some DACA recipients actually went outside the country on DACA and received citizenship since they had either employment-based or family-based sponsorship. But for most of them that is not an option since they don't have any home base in the country they originally came from.
I am a legal resident who had a green card application pretending since 2010. I came to lsu as a student in 2003, have always had legal status. And I can assure you the legal immigration process is so messed up, I don't blame the DACA kids for not trying to go out of the country and then come back legally.

Apologies for this very basic question that has likely been asked numerous times. How do the Dreamers get jobs in the US without citizenship or a green card? Is the I-9 form not required for them or is there an alternate form?

I am not aware of any law that could result in a US citizen being deported from the US.
That being said, of course so called Dreamers can collect welfare, all they have to do is have a baby , boom US citizen they get welfare if they qualify. And that isn't right.

Well considering they are not supposed to be here in the first place I applaud them leaving and trying to come back in legally. Because that is they law and they are showing that they respect our laws.
The ones who remain (and do not respect our laws) should be removed (deported) and NEVER allowed back in. Ever. They should lose the ability to ever join this country if they tried to cheat their way in in the first place.

Very humanitarian of you. You do realize these are people who were brought over as children right? They have lived here their whole life and have nowhere to go. No families or places to go to. I agree they need to work to gain legal status, but I'm not heartless enough to say just pack you stuff move to a country you have never lived or worked in as an adult where you have no family to help, and have no idea how the government there works and just figure it out.
There has to be a better solution than that.

Because the immigration process is arduous and filled with governmental red tape.
There has to be a smart and efficient way of getting these folks through the system and making them legal.

It takes like 3 years to become a citizen, who could wait that long?
