Why do ex Gov employees get to keep their security clearance?

Is it so they can find another gov job?
If I left my company, my access to their information would beat me to the door.

Because there aren’t a whole lot of people qualified to run the CIA. Many of these people return to government after time away. Some act as advisors such as Henry Kissinger.

There are tons of private defense contractors and lobbies that hire such individuals for insane salaries. It's a perk of being a swamp creature. Once you're in. You're in. Ever notice how politicians seem to get wealthier after holding public office?
The same reason rattlesnakes don't bite attorneys. Professional courtesy.

A clearance is good for 5 or 10 years and is renewed at the end of one of those periods. People use those clearances to obtain jobs...it gives them a leg up because if the job requires a clearance it saves the company a lot of money.
Having said that, just because a person has a clearance does not mean they continue to have access to government classified info. There is a difference.
The general rules to accessing classified are a proper clearance AND a need to know. You must have both. If you have a clearance and receive classified WITHOUT a need to know you are violating the law.
For instance, just because someone has a clearance does not mean they can walk into the Pentagon, request access to classified, and receive it no questions asked. It doesn’t work that way.

You don’t lose eligibility. It’s the “need to know” that walks when you don’t have the “ need to know”.
Eligibility does expire eventually after a time period without a reinvestigation.
That said. Some top people that left still retain the ability to be briefed on things. I’ve seen lots of retired General Officers keep eligibility and need to know long after leaving the position.
Unfortunately someone leaking info to people who are currently gone doesn’t give a damn about all that so point is moot.

Perhaps you can explain how Brennan got the job then.

I had a clearance leaving the military. It didn't grant me access to any classified info because I had no need to know.

Having a clearance doesn't give access to info. You have to have a need to know.
It is like an officer stopping a lady for speeding and inputting her plates for insurance coverage. As oppose to an officer inputting her plates to discover her name and address to ask for a date.

It's going to be interesting to see which members of Congress were snagged in this sting. I've got some guess based on recent outbursts.

Thank you for bringing sanity to this thread. I hope someone brought it to the other 6+ page thread.
Got tied up earlier and couldn't respond to the OP, but this is exactly what it would have been.
This is what irks me about the cyber degrees out there. I hope the advisors in these programs are really telling the students what they're up against with clearance jobs and folks who are already vetted. I hope Booz and other companies will open some up to the "general public," but they'd have to have a good reason to want to pay the six figures it costs to get someone a clearance.
