They are far more likely to use profanity and insults.
I was taught that these are signs of inferior intellect.

Read your link again.
They tested respondents on the number of words they knew.
They didn’t ask how often respondents actually used these swear words. They make no claim of that.
Ultimately, the paper makes the boring and somewhat obvious point, smart people have larger vocabularies, and that includes swear words.
