Why didn’t we have mass school shootings every other week back in the 80s?

What’s changed? If anything, we had even more access to guns then than kids nowadays. So why didn’t we have nutjobs going into schools every other week shooing the places up?

And yes, I know there was violence then. And yes, I know there had been school shootings. But those were EXTREMELY rare. So what changed? Why is this happening now? What’s different?

We had mental institutions back then.

No internet or social media to make you nationally famous with a few trigger pulls.

We have them today. And if anything, we are far more aware of mental issues today Han we were back then.

I don't know, but I'll certainly take today's drastically reduced number of gun deaths with some of them being school shootings over the 80s alternative.

Information and perception war.

They are making the right and left hate each other. As much division as possible. Then democracy dies. Freedom dies.

The more insane we get, the more people there are, the more we need them as the solution to our problem.

If you want my amateur opinion, it's multivariabled but the two biggest issues are how the education system treats males and the overprescribing of psychotropic drugs for school aged children.

We were taught respect and consequences for actions...our parents also taught us coping skills. Not everyone was special and got a trophy.

We used to have guns in our vehicles all the time. We'd go hunting before and after school.

Not once did we ever think to go get a gun and start shooting up the school. It literally never crossed our minds.

The media was busy reporting real news rather than telling white people how much we suck and making impressionable kids feel bad about themselves...

Well, we hadn’t outlawed all forms of conflict resolution amongst kids at the time. And we actually encouraged competition so a kid could learn how to deal with failure before failure became really consequential. I mean if they remake Back to the Future, Mary McFly would have to run from the cops for decking Biff.

And we didn’t have social media allowing kids that know they have no tangible consequences to act like shitheads to other kids. And the parents that allow this shite are the same ones that created this “unicorns and rainbows” bullshite view of what real life is.

Mental health is severely underfunded and has faced massive cuts under nearly every president starting with Reagan.

This is really not a discussion of general crime rates comparative from then to now. I genuinely want to have a discussion about the causes behind the literal explosion of the phenomenon of school shootings since the 90s. What was once a rare occourance is now an all too common occurance. What I want to know is what has changed to cause this upswing of mass shootings.

And if anything, the overall decline in violent crime only serves to exasperate the question of how can it be that while violent crime is in decline, School shootings are expanding at an alarming rate. Something is causing this. The question is what is it?

antidepressants, particularly SSRIs on the still developing teen mind may contribute to this in some way. Numbs them to reality? They don’t ponder consequences due to being numb? I don’t know. But we do know that they increase the rate of suicidal thoughts in TEENS. We have seen the rate of teen suicides go up as well as mass shootings since SSRIs prescribed to teens became the norm. If they are more inclined to kill themselves on SSRIs then are they more inclined to kill their classmates??

The education system, eroding of core values, normalizing even glorifying disgusting behavior and the destruction of family while demonizing anyone you’re in disagreement with.
