I knew a retired military guy that swore when coming into Port Au Prince by ship. You could smell it before you could see it.

That video verifies his claims.

That type of pollution shows no pride in their land/country.

The citizens know it's a shithole and, therefore, treat it like a shithole.

How long have they been an independent nation? About 200 years? Done a great job down there. New Orleans seems to be following the same model.

A cousin of mine went on 2 missionary trips to Haiti.
He won't talk about it, other than "terrible, horrible and unbelievable.

Go read economic history and how Haiti was the richest most productive country in the Caribbean when it was run by the French. Then came the revolution and extermination.

The issue with early Independent Haiti was that nobody was willing to trade with a nation of revolutionary slaves. It's extremely disingenuous (though typical) to ignore that historical fact.

As for modern Haiti, I'm not sure. I believe the problem lies in both the creation of their Constitution and how they enforce their laws. I need to read more about the 20th century Haiti and what caused the revolutionary.

But I will add this, just like Puerto Rico and other island nations, they rely heavily on outside investment from mainland territory. that's probably why tourism is the industry of choice for island countries.

Slavery was terrible, but slaves lived in better conditions than today’s Haitians.
