What would we accomplish with a sweeping ban on firearms?

There are far more guns in this country than there are people. A sweeping non-exclusive ban on firearms would be largely ineffective in the short-term. The only difference you would see is empty gun racks in sporting goods stores and empty ammo lockers. it would be years before any legislation made any meaningful impact on the number of firearms held by private citizens. The average gun owner is perfectly capable of reloading rounds so the exodus of commercially produced ammo would be a non-issue for diehards. Furthermore, the 5th amendment to the Constitution states that the government cannot tae personal property without just compensation. This means they would have to instate a sort of mandatory buy back program, which in all likelihood, is impossible to enforce on such a large scale. The bottom line, people will undoubtedly refuse to participate. I would be counted amongst those who refuse to participate in any sort of buy back program, unless the money was right! I may let them buy a few from me!!! Any input??? GUN BANS WONT WORK!!! That's my two cents!

quote:With an absolute "turn in your guns or go to jail" ban, it would probably cut the number of total (legal) guns down by 80-90%; most people have families to support, careers to worry about, etc. and aren't willing to risk all of that to fight big brother.

quote:Ehhh... I'd assume that they'd ban all of that stuff as well. And there aren't many people that can cast lead slugs then fit them in a copper jacket.

Ultimately we'd end up with the cartels running drugs AND ammunition into the US. We'd end up where only the State and criminals have guns and the ability to use them.
Will truly be one of the saddest days in American history.

The government takes personal property without compensation all the time. They do so with trial, and sometimes without coherent charges. The constitution has never once limited the government in any way. Only the populace' belief in the ideas that the constitution codified has ever done that. That belief and understanding of natural rights theory has been dead for a long time, and its precipitous decline started with Lincoln.

It would be unlikely that guns purchased legally prior to any ban would fall into the same category as drugs.

What I think will happen is the economy will crash and the dollar will become worthless. The government will then offer food, water, power, and gas to anybody that voluntarily gives up their firearms. Even the toughest, most belligerent good ole boy will do that in order to care for their children.

I think it would bring the second civil war to this country

This is how the map would look at the start of the war

This is a new and exciting topic that definitely hasn't been discussed here before

Probably a civil war where martial law is enacted and citizens are ordered to turn over their guns under promise that they'll get them back after the conflict. Then they just dont get them back.

Dems could claim a "win," and some ignorant Republicans could "feel better."

Why are simple minded gun nuts the most paranoid people on the planet? Who the hell is calling for all guns to be banned outside of, maybe, a few far left celebs that have no influence on policy at all.
Why so many threads worried about gun confiscation and bans of all guns.
It makes you sound stupid and out of touch.

You have a gift of persuasion like I have never seen before. I never knew calling people idiots could be the beginning and end of a debate.

Well, the Democratic congressional leaders are calling out the NRA for holding the nation hostage, and most can read the intent, but they can only whittle on the edges, as the Constitution will always be there without full blown war. The can’t ban guns without war, people know their rights, and I expect if they ever did try to ban them, it will be the bloodiest time in our History...

Stupid strawman arguments have no value worth debating. They should be called stupid because they are. Not a single lawmaker is calling for the outright banning of all firearms.

Stupid and is thinking that banning accessories or a specific brand of rifle will prevent shootings.
Out of touch is not understanding why people are against banning guns and accessories.

It's called politics. Each party has their boogymen that they use to rile up their sheep into a frenzy. For the left it's the NRA, for the right it's Pelosi, it's Hollywood, etc.

Maybe, just maybe they don't try to ban all guns because they don't want too. You think every hunter is a member of the Republican party? You think every concealed carry license holder is a member of the Republican party?
