Would elected reps then finally be beholden to their constituents?

God no. Banning would just make it harder to track.

There'd still be a hell of a lot of books written.

All that would happen is that some other unelected entity would become more relevant. Most likely the Bureaucracy would become more powerful than ever.

It would be hilarious to see how few laws get written since lobbyists actually wrote most of them.

False dichotomy. Lobbyists work for people and the people are constituents .

Also it would actually make them less beholden to their constituents.

Here's why. Whether there is lobbying or not Bill Gates can pick up the phone and expect his Senator to answer or call back. But you can't. Your best hope of getting the attention of your senator is by joining with a bunch of other people by a donations and having an organization go you guessed it Lobby on your behalf

There's this weird believe that somehow lobbyist Are from Mars. Nope. The NRA NAACP AARP National right to life National pro-choice etc etc etc are all lobbies

Sure but is gifting constitutionally guaranteed? They got rid of all of that for doctors but not for themselves. I wonder why.

It's one of the amendments, one of the first ones I think. Congress shall make no law something something or prohibiting the free exercise thereof something something.

I got you. I was thinking more along the lines of the bribery that goes with it.

They should have to lobby the voters. Contact with elected officials should be a felony.

A whole lot of Congressional staff would quit as they would be required to become policy experts and guide the decisions of their boss in matters they likely know very little about.

Most lobbyists are important for educating members of Congress in complex subjects that directly impact their constituents. Yes, they have an agenda, but it’s important that we expect our representatives to at least have an idea of the stuff they vote on.

If a legislator with a background in real estate has a bill to vote on involving healthcare but doesn't know shite about healthcare so they consult representatives of the healthcare industry to get a better picture, that should be a felony?

They would just find another way to lobby and call it something different.

No, they'd start taking (more) money under the table.
