What is a shithole in terms of country, city, etc?

My definition is a dysfunctional environment which has evolved through corruption, and poor government into a place which by its lack of amenities into an undesirable place to exist. According to MSM, there is no such place on earth, unless it is some place in the southern USA. But world wide, ask any of them to name at least one shithole in the world. Maybe NK, as it is threatening us with nuclear weapons, but I'd say they would come up with nothing.

C’mon, this isn’t a difficult description. It’s a place that has in no way embraced modern architecture or infrastructure because it’s people and govt are complacent living in 3rd world conditions after reciting years of relief, support, and education from developed countries. Lifespan is severely limited not because of natural disasters or global warming, but because the people of said country as a whole refuse to evolve!

Any country where groups of its citizens are routinely risking their lives and willing to leave their friends and families in order to flee the conditions there. This is whether it be by some boat they built out of trash, going through a tunnel under a border, sneaking across a DMZ, etc.

It’s funny, but the mere fact that these immigrants desire to come to America and choose to stay here isolated from their families and cultures says something about the country that they are coming from.
Is it possible that some of these countries are shitholes?

We all know it when we see it. Except for the Progressive media establishment. Which is itself a Fundamentalist Ideological shithole.

Trailer parks in the south certainly qualify as shitholes. It’s where I grew up.

All of them? I've seen some that are well taken care of, neat and seemingly "safe".

Impossible. That's mainly white.. white people don't really know what it's like to be poor (Bernie Sanders). Extreme poverty is part of a place being a shithole, imo.

I grew up in the area but it wasn't like you see in pictures where I lived. We had toilets and running water.
It's all about jobs. No jobs. No hope. No hope. No care. That applies to all races. It's the culture shift making people OK with being dependent that is concerning.

When I first read the topic I thought it was limited to countries only, now that I re-read it I see I was wrong.
I think your definition is pretty damned close. Any place where there is so little hope for an avenue to just a basic level of prosperity that they must leave it in order to do more than just exist.
Or something like that.

I went back to my hometown to "grandpa's farm". I spent my youth there as we lived on a small lot he gave to my parents.
When I went back, there were parts that were beautiful and family oriented in the bigger town next door.
Those areas, in the span of 20 years, became shitholes with those same beautiful places starting to deteriorate and the drink from the brown paper bag on the front porch during work hours crowd had appeared.
There weren't enough jobs out there in the mountains to sustain the population growth.
Why do people have kids in an area like this? It creates a never-ending cycle of hopelessness and dependency.
I grew up in an idyllic place. No locked doors. No stealing of any consequences. No bars or boards on business.
That all changed in less than a generation.
