Unrecognizable now. Old neighborhood now run down, unkept yards. Noticeable Hispanic growth. Shuttered storefronts on the Main Street.

Same thing happened in Mandeville when it became St. Bernard

Where’s your hometown?

Flip side: my hometown has gone from sleepy, Old South farm and mercantile small town to a booming part of industrialization.

I feel like the Hobbits after coming back from their great adventure.

Tried to show my wife my grandmother's beautiful crepe myrtle off South Grand in Monroe.

We didn't so much as slow the car down.

Sad what it's become.

Sometimes it is depressing to go to the hometown of your childhood.

Appropriate for this thread and safe for work

Did you actually read Tolkien? When the hobbits returned their town was a shithole overtaken by bullying, unlawful immigrants and they had to kick them out using lethal force.

Yes, I have, many times. It is clear (to me, at least) that the subtext was about the destruction of rural land in conjunction with modernization, and lamenting the loss of what the idyllic rural England had been. I feel that very much. Of course, it is better than becoming a crime-ridden, poverty-stricken ghost town.

I can accept the economic boom and growth being beneficial to most folks around there while also being sad that the charm and rural idyll has been taken away. It is what it is.

One of Jackson’s greatest mistakes in the LOTR films was killing Saruman at Orthanc and skipping the Scouring of the Shire.

There wasn't time to fit everything in with 3 movies.

I remember people making fun of it for the multiple endings as is. It is one of my favorite parts of the books but it makes sense in movie terms to have to cut it short.

If you’re going to be a jerk, at least be right. Unkept works fine in his context, potentially better than unkempt.

unkept (?n'k?pt) adj
1. (of a promise, secret, appointment, etc) broken or disregarded
2. (of a person or property) not maintained or looked after

Married my wife back in 2000. I took her to the southside of Monroe to show her were I was raised. It was a sad excursion to say the least.

Well, it would have been kind of like the Alamo.
