We need to make it easier to commit people against their will.

That is the only solution I have heard so far that could prevent these things.

Just like Landa, this kid had signs. He should have been institutionalized.

I'm usually not politically correct on this issue but man ppl will abuse the f*ck out of this.

Yall want to keep your freedoms of owning ARs but take away people's freedom of walking the Earth?

Uh, that's scarier than confiscating guns.

Not easier just need more vigilance and more people raising concerns and being involved.

No.

Just go back to some of the laws from the 80's and 90's

Not saying make it super easy. . .just easier.

Set the baseline at Adam Landa, for instance

Nikolas Cruz's freedom to walk the Earth is now taken away.

Nah.
Improve the system.
Had the kid had the right help, there’s nothing to say he wouldn’t have been ok with voluntary inpatient treatment, thereby avoiding the need to ”commit him.”

I have no idea how anyone could possibly write any kind of legislation proposing this that would not be abused by people trying to get out of bad marriages, people getting even with perceived injustices in carrying out wills and estates, people trying to get revenge on their exes, their bosses, and anyone else they feel has screwed them over.

Involuntarily committing people based on a belief that they may commit crimes in the future sounds to me like the first steps toward a dystopian nightmare.

We used to have that before the mid-90's. . .for a looooooong time.

Don't recall any dystopian nightmare.

Does it have potential for abuse, sure. That is why we have lawyers and courts.

Had he been committed prior, there'd be a few more breathing teens in Florida.

Dude you made a terrible thread and made a terrible point. We can not lock up everyone that looks at us funny. Theres way more logic to taking away guns than whatever u typed in the OP.

Adjudicating people to be mentally incompetent isn’t destroying civil rights.

This whole board would be locked up if you allowed that.

I have a brother who is a parinoid schizophrenic, legit crazy, danger to self and others and the state has let him decide to leave or had such lax security that he simply walked away from the facilities hes confined to numerous times.

Counting me and my mother he has tried to kill and or harmed about 10 people.

If he were to get his hands on a capable weapon you'd all know his name and Id be interviewed (probably only once) to say that the Great State of %$÷/%@ is responsible and I could tell you why.

I love my brother dearly and do all I can for him but part of my existence is fighting the state to keep him off the streets, some people unfortunately have to be locked away for their own good and for the safety of others
