To ex-military types - do any of you find it a little odd that a former LTC is now Sec Def?

My life was going along perfectly fine without having an official Sec Def

One thing that is true of rank in the military, is just because someone might have more than you does not necessarily mean they are more knowledgeable or capable.

I'd love to see a former E-8/9 as Sec Def, instead of some of the high ranking officers that give politically correct responses.

I've been in & around the military for most of the past 40 yrs and while I agree with this, most O-5s don't get invites to all of the TS & above meetings.

Me too but for different reasons; so all those flag officers would have to kiss his arse

I find it refreshing. The BULK of the strategic work in most headquarters, i.e. the ones who do all the analysis, metrics and data, then package it for the Colonels and above to make decisions on, is done by Majors and Lieutenant Colonels on their staffs.

They're probably more knowledgeable about policies than the ones they write them for.

That already happens. You'd be surprised how much deference many Sergeants Major get from senior officers for doing absolutely nothing.

Don't get me wrong, stellar E8s and E9s are absolutely indispensable and can mask even the worst command climate...but the other extreme...and there's no "middle" when it comes to E8 and above. You're either really good...or really terrible.

Anyone downvoting me is being deliberately ignorant of the fact that when you've got a bad E8 or bad E9...it's REALLY bad. Example: When I was a Company Commander, the Brigade Commander tried to ban alcohol from official Brigade events, but couldn't do it because his CSM was an alcoholic.

On a tactical level I agree but IMO not so much on the strategic level.

That’s a slippery slope. The next thing you’d be calling for is a politically incorrect billionaire who has never held office to be President and that would be a catastrophe.....Or would it?

In all seriousness, I like your idea. Drain the whole flippin place and put real people up there. That goes for both sides of the aisle!

Not necessarily. LTC is sort of the last "working" rank in the officer corp. Add to that his 10 years active duty and 11 in the National Guard and it is likely either the limit of spots higher or he just wanted to stay there.

He was 101st so he knows how to fight.

The current acting one was a Captain in the Corps and Chuck Hagel was a sergeant..... So it is not that weird.

I'd rather a former Senior Enlisted man be SECDEF.

McNamara was a LTC,

Lovett and Gates were Lt. Commanders,

Clifford was an O-6,

Laird was a junior naval officer,

Richardson was a Lt. (Army),

Rummy was an O-6,

Weinberger was a O-3,

Carlucci was an O-3,

Aspin O-3,

Perry O-1,

Bob Gates O-1,

Panetta O-2,

So it isn't that weird...

What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn

That’s not the point of the thread.
