Washington DC officials bar NFL team’s return over controversial name

The Washington Redskins are reportedly stuck at FedEx Field unless the organization decides to change its name.
The team is looking to move to a new stadium in the near future, but their relocation from Maryland to the RFK Stadium in D.C. now hinges on the organization’s willingness to change its name, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday.
Government officials echoed the same message.

“I call on Dan Snyder once again to face that reality, since he does still desperately want to be in the nation’s capital,” D.C.’s nonvoting House Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton said. “He has got a problem he can’t get around — and he particularly can’t get around it today, after the George Floyd killing.”
D.C. Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio agreed with Norton.
“There is no viable path, locally or federally, for the Washington football team to return to Washington, D.C., without first changing the team name,” he said.

Washington currently plays at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. The stadium opened in 1997.
According to NBC Sports Washington, the Redskins expressed interest in playing at RFK Stadium after a bill was introduced in 2019 urging the federal government to sell the land to the city. The bill won’t pass unless the land is used for the team under a different name.

What on earth does George Floyd have to do with the Redskins?

Don't even care.
The NFL is ridiculous and leftist politicians are ridiculous. Let them fight each other.

It doesn’t. But Norton is CBC and sees everything through the prisms of race and/or graft.

So... they want the team to give into the city’s demands in order to move there?
That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.
That's actually how it works. Each side has things they want in a negotiation. If one side decides to be adamant about a stipulation the other side is opposed to, that's an impasse.
There are many other cities and states which would gladly take an NFL franchise.

I think the Oklahoma City Redskins has a nice ring to it.
DC does have a proud tradition of sending Native Americans to Oklahoma after all.

Native Americans had slaves. How come people aren't going after them the same way they are going after confederate statues?

Clearly, they do not comprehend leverage.

Interesting...I wonder what Native Americans think?
“Nine in 10 Native Americans say they are not offended by the Washington Redskins name, according to a new Washington Post poll that shows how few ordinary Indians have been persuaded by a national movement to change the football team’s moniker.”
“ The survey of 504 people across every state and the District reveals that the minds of Native Americans have remained unchanged since a 2004 poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found the same result.”
“ Among the Native Americans reached over a five-month period ending in April, more than 7 in 10 said they did not feel the word “Redskin” was disrespectful to Indians. An even higher number — 8 in 10 — said they would not be offended if a non-native called them that name.”
Good thing Self hating White liberals know what’s best and are outraged for native Americans.
You are thinking normal negotiations.
An NFL team is one of 32 and not just going to plop down in your city without inducements.
Do they think that if the Redskins leave that they will just be able to have the Detroit Lions move in instead?

WTF do these even have in common?
Indians are black people now? I'm confused by the logic that the name must be changed because a drughead was killed
