Hope these fellas wise up. Coonman’s gonna lead them down the primrose path of destruction.
The “threat” is a building contractor, son of a retired state police captain.
quote:
As the conversation unfolds, the two officers say that they received a tip that a man was seen going around the Capital Square, touching buildings and taking pictures.
They asked if he had been touching the pillars of the buildings to ‘check the density’? He laughed them off and gave a perfectly reasonable answer: the Capital building’s own tour tells visitors that the pillars of the Capital building are whole, plastered trees. He is a builder, and was interested in that detail.
These guys were undeterred! They further said that several police officers watched a video of him on the grounds that day and thought he was doing ‘pre-operational planning.’
Initially it was just ‘a tip’ that had lead these agents to his house. But the law-abiding citizen pointed out that this was outrageous, and exactly why Red Flag laws are so terrible! A simple tip from a random citizen landed him under this sort of scrutiny for walking around a public place!
That’s when the detail came out: the tip wasn’t from a random stranger who saw him and thought he was suspicious. He was under surveillance by Capital Police the entire time he was visiting the Capital

Sounds like North Korea.

If I were a Virginian I’d like to know the price tag of these “surveillances.” (You know he’s not the only one.) You’re surveilling citizens likely with no criminal records over something that’s not criminal and there are how many unsolved homicides, sex crimes and crimes against children out there???

This is a huge set up for a FF event. Why the frick would they put all those people in a fenced in area?

The police interviewed the guy. The same people upset about that interview would be screaming for the heads of the entire security detachment, if they had ignored him and he had planted a bomb that killed or injured dozens of people.
Officers charged with assuring the safety of the capitol building were watching the feeds of video cameras IN the capitol building. EGADS, it is like the damned Norks!
NB4 “how can a libertarian say that?” Asking polite and reasonable questions during a non-custodial interview does not violate anyone’s rights, and the gentleman had the option of declining the interview. Instead, he chose to be belligerent and argumentative with two guys who were doing their jobs in a polite and professional way.
EDIT
Just watched the remainder of the video, and I had to laugh. The gentleman asserted that he needed to perform his own security check of the grounds, because he anticipated that law enforcement would do a “piss poor job” of providing security. He made that assertion AS HE WAS BEING INTERVIEWED by law enforcement officers who were interviewing him as a result of their diligence in providing that very security. I doubt that he sees the unintended irony.

Somebody needs to check the VA budget to see if there’s hidden funding for a bunker to protect Guv Buckwheat and his Nazi staffers.

The very action of going door to door like that is reason enough to be mad. They lied to his face in the beginning about it being "just a tip" as it wasn't a tip. They had him under surveillance, and tracked his face and address to then show up at his door - which is insane.
I am sorry, but I'd be just as mad as the gentleman was. This is America, there is no "should be able to" we have the damn right to go look at a place we plan to visit a place freely (right to assemble) without harassment. Harassment is exactly that, a knock on the door with no reason, no warrant, no anything.
You may call it a "non-custodial interview". The rest of us call it what it is, harassment. He has the right to assemble, unless you want to take that basic, human right away as well. This is the next wave of civil rights activism. Our rights don't come from some government; allowing us the gift of basic human rights of free assembly and self defense. Those rights come from the Divine Providence, something higher. We have defined our rights, and the government must respect them.

I've been a structural designer for over 25 years and I've never heard of such a thing.
Not doubting this guy's veracity; I'm sure that's what he was told. On the contrary, I'm guessing he was as incredulous as I am.

Would it have been “harassment,” if they had interviewed a guy doing the same things while wearing an Antifa shirt and a keffiyeh?
I do not like the “we got a tip” charade, either. Just be upfront and say “you were observed taking some actions that gave rise to concern, so we are just here to be certain that everything is kosher.”
The officers’ report to their boss: “The guy is a hothead and a crackpot, but probably harmless.”

Virginia is a powder keg right now and the govt is in high alert. The bad part is that the whole crisis is self inflicted. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it all explode at any time.
The country is about to witness what happens when you really start infringing on constitutional rights.
Pray for the USA

I'm looking forward to being interrogated by the Gestapo after my next sight-seeing tour. It's no big deal, every American should be fine with explaining their actions to state agents "investigating" a non-crime.

Definitely. Harassment is harassment.
If parts of a building are deemed unique by a tour guide, then yeah.. people are going to touch and feel the materials.
If the gov is so concerned about that, then they can get certain buildings off of the tour routes. In Raleigh, I've followed a couple of tour guides, I've touched a few government buildings, a lot of people have, in the tour groups I was in.

Surprise Surprise...
Me: Not in the least.

This is the evolution of "swatting" and it's only going to get worse as long as the ones calling in fake reports are not held accountable and harshly punished.

Yep. Profound and highly problematic irony...in that it will likely require a 'Police State' to bet back those who would impose a (Democratic Leftist) Police State.
