The Hill

quote:

The Democratic-led Virginia House of Delegates has passed legislation that seeks to award the state's electoral votes to the presidential candidate that wins the national popular vote in an election.

The measure, also known as House Bill 177, passed the legislative chamber in a 51-46 vote on Tuesday after clearing the body's Privileges and Elections Committee in a vote last week. If the legislation is passed by the Senate, where Democrats also hold control, and signed into law by the governor, Virginia would subsequently be entered into the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

"Under the compact, Virginia agrees to award its electoral votes to the presidential ticket that receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia," a bill summary states. "The compact goes into effect when states cumulatively possessing a majority of the electoral votes have joined the compact."

quote:

"A state may withdraw from the compact; however, a withdrawal occurring within six months of the end of a President's term shall not become effective until a President or Vice President has qualified to serve the next term," the summary continues.

So far, only 15 states and Washington, D.C., have entered the compact, according to National Popular Vote, a nonprofit group tracking the status of states on the issue. A group of states possessing 74 electoral votes would need to join the agreement in order for the compact to take effect.

And those 15 states that have enacted this shite into law are:
California
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
District of Columbia
Hawaii
Illinois
Massachusetts
Maryland
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
Oregon
Rhode Island
Virginia
Vermont
Washington

I would love to see their case against SCOTUS.

Now that’s dumb as hell. They are letting the rest of the country decide where the voters of VA’s interest go. What a bunch of mentally ill circus clowns.

And almost all of these to a T have voted straight Dem for a minimum of 12 years. Closer to 32 years in the case of some.

This is extremely fricked up. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea is brain dead. It is NOT equivalent to a national popular vote when single states make this decision. A national popular vote would mean different campaigning, different voter turnout, etc. THis is just horseshite and unfair. Potentially unfair to both sides

I know the average dem on social media is too stupid to realize this when they talk about 2016 muh popular vote.

Virginia legislators tell their citizens, 'what's good for New York is good for you."

These people are insane.

What's to keep a state from refusing if the wrong candidate wins?

Spillover from DC and MD. If the District and Maryland weren't so fricking horrible with stupid laws, these fricking parasites wouldn't have invaded NOVA.

That puts them at 213 EV's from the blue states that have signed up for this. If PA, MI, WI, and NV signed up (the next "bluest" states, then that would get above 270 EV's and then be binding.

They are not mentally ill at all. They are successfully establishing a system that will benefit their party and power. Once established it will be the new norm. To challenge it will become a radical act.

Those are NOT Virginians in the House much of the time.

This is a sad time for my home.

Every single state voted blue last election.

This is just a win for the Republicans in reality. There is massive red voter suppression in California and New York. Now you just made them relevant again

Nebraska and Maine do not award their electoral votes like the other 48 states. It would appear it is up to each state to determine how to choose their Electors.

So if Trump wins the popular vote, California would award its electoral votes to him? That would be fun.

D.C. is not a state, but the Dems would love it to be.
