i volunteered marines and for vn, but was sent ft polk for army and then orders changed to stateside. i skated, but not from the emotions.

I did my basic training at Fort Knox in the summer(early 2000's not 60's) and for a Louisiana boy, the heat was a breeze. I can remember my step dad talking about doing basic at Polk. I can't even fathom how brutal. He went over in 69' and did his stateside duty as the armorer at Fort Humbug in Shreveport. He said he would have almost rather have went back After that, he ended up in the Coast Guard reserves for over 30 years and even got his commission. You guys were a special breed.
