Do we have enough vents to meet demand, in your opinion?

Cuomo said yes, but that could change.

JBE still needs 11,875 of his 12,000.

There is not a vent for everyone in america nor would there ever be. We dont have a corvid every year, respiratory failure is few and far between.

like I said before,

by the end of the month we are going to be up to our asses with them

20 years from now thousands will be sitting in warehouses in un-opened boxes.

Yes - the prevailing model, which to be fair has been very close with it's midline projection on deaths, has overestimated hospitalization use by a factor of 3 and ventilator by at least a factor of 2 if not 3.

We'll be fine. Recall we already had 3x the number of ICU beds per capita than Italy did. And demand (while robust in spots) has not broken any of our systems so far. And :fingerscrossed: we may be getting to the very worst of demand now and over the next few days.

The estimates of how long the patients would be on vent are important here. If the models assume that patients will be on vent for an average of 10 days, then the need for more vents is greater than if people actually placed on vent die in two to three days.

As a nation, we absolutely have enough. We have roughly 3X more vents per capita than Italy or France, and about 5X that of Britain.

The problem is one of extreme need in hotspot locales. Especially in instances such as NY, where there was fair warning over several years of a relative ventilator shortage. Meanwhile, there are thousands of idled vents throughout the midwest.

Given that 90% of the people who go on the Vents die, there should be a lot freeing up soon.

Meh, not really. But CPAP was apparently underutilized in some instances.

LA never got above 60% ventilation usage in any of the 6 regions.

That's fairly obvious.

Probably pains you to say it, but with current demand, we are ok.

We seem to be holding close to steady, but there’s a dark side to that as well.

LA Dept of Health

Click on the ventilators tab below the map. Doesn't appear to be a shortage.

Edited to add there is frickery going on. The ventilator tab has been removed from https://ldh.la.gov/Coronavirus/ site.

I wish I took a screen shot. There were over 200 Vents available in region 1 as of noon today.

Go ahead and say it. People are dying as fast as they are going on Ventilators.

We're going to be using ventilators for boat anchors after this thing passes.

The press has made it THE measuring stick for public policy decisions while providing absolutely no rational context whatsoever.
