Dictators typically amass power over time, and in the shadows. How is this possible in the age of the internet, with the whole world watching?

quote:

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's new pro-government constituent assembly on Saturday removed dissident state prosecutor Luisa Ortega from her job, in what critics called a blatant affront to democracy. Since the opposition started a round of protests in April, Ortega has become President Nicolas Maduro's main challenger from within the ruling socialist movement, accusing him of human rights abuses. The new constituent assembly, which Ortega said was fraudulently elected last weekend, unanimously decided to remove her in its first session on Saturday. Earlier in the day, security forces had taken up position in front of her office, blocking Ortega from entering the building. She left on a motor bike amid the chaos.

Ya socialism, rock on. It'll work here though, trust the dems.

Gonna be hilarious when PDVSA defaults later this year and no one in that shite hole will have a pot to piss in.

Here is a really good article on Social Matter that elaborates on the evolution of extranational bodies that Chavez created that even now are helping to retain the current government.

Turkey also. Not the same situation but another example of a country quickly becoming ruled by a dictator.

The modern world's international organizations and the global media, having forgotten (or chosen to disregard) the lessons from the Cold War and Stalin, Mao and other socialist dictators' purges, are by and large socialist-oriented.

Socialism is nothing but an oligarchy parading around as if they help the proles, and without a market system, it becomes far, far worse than any corporate/capitalist oligarchy. At least we get to buy shite and eat well.

Why would you think this? Who is going to stop them?

And they don't quite see it your way. They say they are dealing with traitors, trolls, and populists. And, it's analogous to what the Dem and GOPe Establishments are doing in Congress today.

The argument I've heard over and over, albeit from mainly naive college students, is that true socialism works, and all those examples you give are failures....But, their brand of socialism hasn't been implemented yet. Everyone just needs to give them a chance, they promise it's gonna work this time. Trust them...

If someone wants to implement 'real socialism this time guys' in a local area in which all participants give their consent, I don't give a damn. They can starve on their own time. It's the imposition of these ideal over a wide area that sicken and enrage me.

Our government is trying to oust our President because he's looking out for the rights of the people. What makes you think Venezuela would be any better?

I would say that's more of a delusional base that thinks it'll happen. If he actually is impeached, we are in serious trouble as far as corruption and power of the deep state.

The Venezuelans have also been dealing with 800% inflation and a GDP decrease of 19%. There was an article last year that had a dozen eggs at $150.

I have a colleague from Venezuala. He is saddened by everything happening in his country.

Because of this he says the 2nd amendment is the greatest thing ever. There the people can't defend themselves and it makes it easier for those in power to do as they please.

A unit of gold in World of fricking Warcraft has a better exchange value than a unit of their currency (bolivar?).

Modern world.
Ancient world.
Future world.

People are people. We do great good. We do great evil. Only the technology changes.

Poor education is the cause of this "we are modern and therefore superior to the ignorant savages of the past" bullshite common in today's culture.

Just saying.

Was only a few years ago that Bernie Sanders stated that if you want to live the American Dream you have to go to Venezuela.
