UTexas: Free tuition for families with AGI<$65K

I got my MBA at this place, so I am on a few email circulars.
UT has established an endowment that will fully cover tuition for Texas families with an AGI below 65K. There will be support for AGI's above that, up to 125K.
I have no problem with college cost support. I got my first degree at A&M largely due to a scholarship that paid full tuition and almost all other costs.
What I do bristle about is that this is not being supported by some new bucket of money they found. This will almost certainly be paid for by increasing the cost for everybody else.
I also believe it does nothing to rein in costs in general and it reinforces the trope that college is the silver bullet. It certainly can be, but too often it is just a path to a useless degree with no practical skills or marketability.
This program just strikes me as more virtue-signalling with little practical impact on the core issues.

Oh, and get off my lawn.

We want our students to take advantage of all the opportunities UT has to offer and experience the exceptional education of our “University of the First Class.” We are committed to help lessen student debt and make a UT education affordable for Texans from middle- and low-income families. This new long-term investment will help more students succeed and become the future leaders of tomorrow for our state, nation, and the world.
Oh, and get off my lawn.

College ain't for everybody.
When will academics figure this out?

Pay your fair share and like it.
If they are making it more expensive for others then this is nothing but overt redistribution.
Aren't high tuition prices already the issue?

it's more about keeping up with the Jonses
these days, you can't claim to be an elite overall institution without some similar program
many of the Ivies have been doing this for a decade +

Are they going to lower their admission standards next? I mean that is the next logical step, right?

Already did, had a huge lawsuit over the past few years about affirmative action admissions

so, make it more affordable for those that do not have the mental capacity to even be there? makes perfect sense to me...

This will almost certainly be paid for by increasing the cost for everybody else.

This will attract freeloaders from across the globe.

I definitely agree with this..... most times. The world needs ditch diggers. if the student is going into gender studies, let them grab a shovel.
however, I do know that it's the top end of the students that end up getting in to this particular school, think top 10s in high school classes.
if a person is smart enough to get in, they should be able to. of course, I don't mind if they create their own debt doing it either. I had a mix, so I definitely ran up debt (and have subsequently paid it off).

wut?
i'd imagine the vast majority of UT applicants fall within the 10% rule regardless

we lived in Austin for 13 years. this way to handle it is ripped directly from another institution there in Austin that one of my kids was involved in. when I realized it had been done to us, it was the beginning of the end for me. I could no longer hold my nose.

yeah this jump in discussion from the tuition issue to admissions in this thread is a bunch of stupidity from posters
UT gets way more applications than it can admit every year. it's not like UT is trying to drum up demand for admission

If they require normal academic standards and maintaining a good GPA this will sort itself out.

Do you have issues following a thread? I asked if there was an exception for these less than 65K students... Someone answered that the admissions requirements had been lowered in a lawsuit...
then I made the statement that you quoted... So, either refute what the other poster stated OR shite in the corner and STFU...

It will be as long as the feds monopolize student lending.

Which would be a great way to exceed the 85 scholarship limit...

But, that just means you are always against it. Money doesn't grow on trees. There are always consequences to making something "free".
