US Steel to restart Illinois plant

U.S. Steel said it is reopening the plant because it anticipates the announced tariff will cause an increase in domestic demand for steel.
“Our Granite City Works facility and employees, as well as the surrounding community, have suffered too long from the unending waves of unfairly traded steel products that have flooded U.S. markets,” said U.S. Steel President and CEO David Burritt.
U.S. Steel said it expects to rehire 500 employees this month, although getting the plant up and running again could take up to four months.
“We’ve worked closely and cooperatively with leadership of the United Steelworkers to develop a plan that will help us work through the restart process in the safest, most efficient manner possible while enabling longer-term collaboration designed to improve the plant’s competitiveness,” Burritt said. So happy 500 workers could benefit while the rest of the 320MM citizens face higher prices!

Eh, I don't think inflating prices to start up a steel mill is a win for the general public

Republicans touting tariffs. I've seen it all.

I'd rather take advantage of another country eating the cost of an important input into many of our industries.

Sounds like they're starting up an old plant, not modernizing it

eating the cost

Id be willing to pay a fraction of a cent more for a can of beanie weenies if it meant an umemployed steel worker could provide for his family. Besides, i always see leftists on here criticizing Trump for touting things like "consumer confidence" because people dont need more "stuff". So shouldnt you leftists support higher prices if it means people are buying less stuff and consuming less? You people are so contradictory.

You are short sighted then. Let it play out.

So you're suggesting the corporate tax cut, elimination of burdensome regulations, and repatriation tax cuts won't allow companies who are purveyors of steel to offset added costs that might arise from the steel tariffs?
So what are they doing with all the savings then?

Sure that extra .03 per can in a six pack will cause you to stop drinking beer. LOL

the restart process in the safest, most efficient manner possible while enabling longer-term collaboration designed to improve the plant’s competitiveness,” Maybe, maybe not.

My mistake. Not sure how I could have possibly misinterpreted that.

That's all fine and good until that "another country" decides to embargo their goods and services from you and suddenly there is a huge shortage in a time of crisis.
Ever heard of the OPEC oil embargo in the 70s?
Ever heard of us withholding steel from Japan in the 30s?
That's just two of many examples.

Those commie Libtards at Fortune Magazine say hi.
But on the plus side, USS gets to reopen its magnificent showplace in Granite City.
quote:
The number of American workers in the metals industry could increase by an estimated 33,464 jobs, the decrease in other industries would be more significant: an estimated 179,334 jobs. This means that the net loss could total 146,000 jobs.
But on the plus side, USS gets to reopen its magnificent showplace in Granite City.
