The United States has said it has conducted an “extraordinary” flight over Ukraine amid escalating tensions between Kiev and Moscow. The announcement comes eleven days after a naval clash that saw Russian forces open fire on and seize three Ukrainian warships near the Kerch Strait. In a statement released on Thursday, the Pentagon said the timing of the flight - undertaken as part of the Open Skies Treaty, was “intended to reaffirm US commitment to Ukraine and other nations.”

We're about to see how tough Russia and Putin wants to be. Trump will call an attack if Russia moves into Ukrainian territory.

Germany will back russia because of oil and gas deals. It's going to get hot this summer.

Washington is said to be making preparations to sail a warship into the Black Sea, although the option may not be taken up. The flight also comes days after Washington said it suspending its participation in a Cold War-era nuclear arms treaty with Moscow over violations of the deal by the Kremlin. Russia denies any such violations

It’s a tired phrase, but Ukraine isn’t worth a single dead American.

Putin has to be livid. He colluded with Trump to rig the election and now his puppet double crossed him.

How is this flight extraordinary? This flight is part of the Open Skies Treaty, I know there have been issues in the past few years, but Russian flights should be flying over the United States and US flights going over Russia in accordance with a treaty signed in 1992.

I think Putin will push all at once. He's under historic pressure as the Russian leader.

I've felt for some time that the Democrats stupid Russia narrative had the potential to actually undermine any Trump strength against Russia.

Say Trump pisses of Putin, then the Russians float some BS to lend credibility to the collusion narrative. That's the one thing that could really erode Trump's presidency and the Dems essentially handed the play to Putin.

Ukraine isn’t an ally.

This is just more neocon idiocy. They’re like children, playing at war. Except they have real power. And real people will die.

He probably sleeps just fine at night. The economy is in decent shape, and he’s popular.

Ive been reading your posts on Ukraine with interest over the last few days as I don’t know much of the political scene over there, but it seems you’re tuned in. What is it that makes them worthless? Is it the blatant corruption? Apparently there is a segment who wants to be Russian and a segment that wants to align with the West... I understand the idea that American lives are not worth wasting, but is it a state we want to align with at all? Or is it more just a buffer between Russia and more worthy Euros?

CNN: Trump preparing to sail USN ship to award Putin as a Xmas Present, already dropping Ukraine presents from flights over Kiev

The US Open Skies planes should be flying over Russia - There is nothing neo-con about this. This is like "Winds of Change" Scorpions - We are going to be friends with Russia and Russians can visit American PXs 1990s fun.

Yes, this is an open skies flight, but factor in the arms deliveries, the military to military training, the joint military exercise. Also our direct involvement in Ukrainian elections, and specifically, the protests we helped organize, that toppled the Yanukovych government.

We’re up to our necks in this, and everything do encourages Kyiv to take more and more foolish risks.

Ukraine believes we will help than defeat Russia.

We may flirt with the idea, which is irresponsible, and makes a crisis more likely, but we would never back them up. We’ll do what we did with Hungary in 56, or Iraq after the Gulf War.

Going down this route will only bring them pain and sadness, and potentially partition. And it’s not necessarily because of anything Russian does. Western Ukrainians, the current government, are pushing policies that victimize Eastern Ukrainians.

Their best option is actually to make peace with Russia, and provide cultural concessions to eastern Ukraine. That will not happen as long as we continue to indulge the radicals in Kyiv.
