my question is why is anyone other than the state department, the president or someone he appoints allowed to travel to meet with other countries?
WTF can Nancy Pelosi do or even really discuss with any country? not just her any Speaker of the House.
this is just another huge waste of tax payer dollars. All of this travel shite pisses me off almost as much as all the bullshite money we give away. not to mention all the military tech that we pay R&D on and then allowed to just be sold to other countries.
Realistically you don't make this visit and then leave them without giving them something. To visit them and the leave saying, sorry I changed my mind we're not going to vote on that aid package. No, you make this visit to finalize a deal and then get political mileage (someone previously mentioned "appear strong"... there it is) out of the announcement AFTER you are back on American soil.
Also just as realistically (as someone else mentioned) the aid/support package she is most certainly there to finalize and then announce also includes personally lucrative and nationally important semiconductors. It is no coincidence the bill on the chips passed the Senate and is now at the House for a vote following her husband's $500 mmUSD investment in the same.

Why would you support a meaningless diplomatic photo-op, regardless of destination? If for no other reason that it is a total waste of money.
It would be one thing if Pelosi were actually doing something material, but she isn't. She is inherently incapable of doing so in this instance from her role as Speaker.

I don't get China's problem. It's a diplomatic visit. We aren't sending Pelosi over there with nukes.

That IS China's problem. They are going to object to any action by anyone that lends legitimacy to the ROC government. An official visit by the Speaker of the House predictably will result in an unusually large tantrum.
