The topic du jour is Virginia, but the stories rarely mention that Virginia's servers underwent maintenance over the weekend. Many of the weekend cases were delayed to yesterday and today. There may be some real rise in cases, but it will take a few days to see how much of a spike actually exists.

This is Exhibit A as to why I really only pay attention to 7 day rolling averages. That and to understand if there was a cluster in a certain area that drove up a daily number.

The other critical piece of information regarding new cases is the source of those cases.

For example in Arkansas, our prison system went through a huge spike a couple of weeks ago. Just looking at the numbers would make you (media) think that Arkansas was seeing a huge spike in cases.

The raw number of new cases simply isn't a good indicator of how the virus is growing in the community at large.

The same situation exists for Nursing Home cases vs the general population.

In Arkansas's case, Prisons and Nursing Homes account for roughly 47% of all cases.

One of the things I built into the new tracker is Weekly Numbers. So the foundation exists to do reporting on a weekly basis. This would give a much better view of the metrics without the spikes and lags.

I haven't done anything with that data yet, it's coming.

318 on vents. Up 8% over last Sunday. Which was up ~5% over the week before... Y’all are probably playing some borrowing/renting games with vents...There’s currently 539 in ICU according to the state.

The Covid Tracking project says that those ventilator and ICU numbers are cumulative, not current. I haven't been following Alabama data, don't know if that's right or wrong.

My local vicinity of Midland TX: LINK

Credit to our local government for keeping a great watch on the situation. But there are a stupid 40-50 known cases of the area’s 90 related to a single nursing home.

Just based on population of Alabama, I would guess those numbers are cumulative. But that’s just a guess.

Doesn’t look like today will be the big spike day. 3 PM CST and we’re only at 464 deaths for today.

Tomorrow may be a big reporting day, unfortunately.

Not seeing a big jump the day after a long weekend certainly seems like a good sign to me. Hopefully that holds tomorrow as well.

Cases fell by 2.8K from yesterday driven by a 139K decline in testing even with a 1% increase in the positive rate. The lower number of tests was too large to not have an impact on the cases. Week over week, cases are down 22% and 14K below their peak on 4/7.

Deaths were up from yesterday about 20% but given the low numbers from the last couple of days it was to be expected. If the typical pattern holds, tomorrow will be a much higher number of deaths. If it's not, that's a great sign. The 7 Day rolling average continues to fall. Today's deaths @ 629 were the lowest they have been since the peak of Tuesday deaths on 4/21 @ 2.5K.

Mortality remains at 5.6% (Based off the COVID tracking numbers instead of WoM).

Note: The new tracker is based on the COVID Tracking project numbers as they publish a data feed that allows me to pull all state and US data in one go and NOT have to key it in manually. The COVID Tracking Project numbers do not line up exactly to WoM's number which is the cause in the different in mortality%.

The new tracker is slow to update when you open it, and I'm still having some issues with sharing. I ran a test where I created about 20 tabs for 20 different states and the workbook took over 5 minutes to open and update...no one has time for that. So I deleted all the extra tabs and am going with just a US tab and a States Tab. You will be able to choose the state you want to see via the Yellow Box in the top left corner of the States tab, note that it will change it for everyone viewing the file.

In my file, wherever you see a light yellow field, you can select data at that location.

Tiguar

Saw a couple of mentions of using Quercetin to treat Covid 19. Hadn’t seen it anywhere else. There’s a trial underway.

For those of you who still care to follow these numbers, I need your help with the new tracker

1) The old tracker was based on the WorldOMeter site. I would manually key in the numbers multiple times a day. The new tracker is based on the data feed from the COVID tracking project which only updates once per day, usually between 4 and 5 PM CST.

What this means to you: The data on the tracker is fully static until the update process runs around 5 PM, it won't be updated again until the following day.

2) Because this is a shared sheet, any changes are visible to everyone. In order to display data for all 50 states, I have 2 choices, 1) create a tab for each individual state or 2) Create one state tab and allow the viewer to select the state they want to view. The problem with the 50 tab approach is that Google sheets don't possess the raw processing power to update 50+ tabs in a very fast manner. 20 State tabs took almost 5 minutes, so 50 tabs would probably take at least 12 minutes just to open up, obviously not a workable method. The problem with the 2nd approach, let the user change the state, is that if you are looking at Georgia and someone changes it to Alabama, you will now see Alabama. While this might be ok in low traffic times, in the late afternoon when multiple people are hitting the sheet it really doesn't work well as multiple people are changing the state to see what they want to see.

The answer to this is to allow you to download a copy of the sheet to your local computer, then you can change the parameters to your heart's content without negatively impacting the other users. The problem with this approach is you would have to download it every day as the data changes every day. A slight tradeoff but workable.

What I need to know: Would you rather download this sheet and manipulate it on your own computer without interference from other users, or do you prefer it to remain 100% online only?

3)This sheet presents much more data than the previous tracker which makes the user interface more important. For example I added two collapsible row groups on the left side of the sheet at the top, This allows you to collapse the upper data section to see more of the data grid and graphs below.

What I need to know: Does this tracker answer the questions you are asking?

Finally, I continue to appreciate your kind words and feedback. I enjoy doing this kind of work, so it does not feel like work to me. I viewed it as an opportunity to learn much more about google sheets and it's capabilities. What I'm presenting here would be MUCH easier and dramatically faster to do in Excel/Access; however, there isn't a good way to share that on the web.

Don’t see a problem with this. This is now a once-a-day check. I mean, I check the numbers more often than that. But it’s fine to just check once a day.
