UPDATE: Georgia Senate Blocks Delta Tax Break
As of 2 hours ago: AJC

quote:

The Georgia Senate blocked a lucrative tax break bill on Monday that would benefit Delta Air Lines after the Atlanta-based company severed ties with the National Rifle Association.

Also, there seems to be a fact overlooked in the other thread, judging by posts of “let the market decide” and “politicians shouldn’t punish” etc. Delta was getting a gift from GA in the presence of a huge tax break on jet fuel that was special to them. Other airlines, including Qatar and Turkish just this past year, have complained about it and threatened legal action over GA playing favorites and placing competitors at a disadvantage by giving Delta the exemption.

So you could say that GA is letting the market run free by removing the Delta tax break.

You can debate whether it’s smart or dumb in the long term but Delta opened the political door. And I don’t see them going anywhere because they get a ton of other freebies and benefits from GA. Just not their gas anymore, as of right now.

They probably wanted to avoid the legal pitfalls brought by the other airlines, and used this as an excuse. Don't know but it seems like a nice cover.

Yep, for all we know GA will get them the money in other ways.

Still, dumb of Delta to wade into this.

The cost of moving their hub away from Hartsfield would be astronomical.

could be offset by whoever wants to bring them in, but I doubt they go anywhere. Delta has plenty of sway in GA politics they will get what they want eventually.

I know nothing about that.
But if other airlines are fighting it, maybe it shouldn’t have happened?
No clue.

I don’t live in Georgia, and I rarely fly Delta.
But I’ll say it again here: If Delta doesn’t want to support the NRA, they shouldn’t be threatened.
And if a baker doesn’t want to bake a cake for a wedding, he shouldn’t have his livelihood taken from him.

It’s all messed up.

They aren’t being threatened. They just aren’t getting a special tax incentive because they forgot it’s the conservatives in Georgia that butter their bread, not the libs in social media. They bit the hand that feeds and it was withdrawn for a bit.

The fuel tax exemption is to the tune of $50M a year.

It’s best if a company doesn’t pick sides in a political debate, especially an emotional and irrational one like the current fracas.

The nra haters have been the most shrill and Delta fell in line with other companies in this frenzy. I think they have been caught a bit blindsided here. I don’t think they believed they would receive a backlash from 2nd Amendment supporters and I certainly don’t believe they felt they would lose their fuel subsidy.

No doubt, but they cowtow to these frickers all the time.

Although not in the conservatives playbook, I wish they would unite in some innerwebz clearinghouse or which companies to exclude buying stuff from.

Twitter is followed by uber leftists who really buy into this crap and conservatives just kind of laugh it off.

Delta went back to putting CNN on in every Sky Club. I fricking hate them. Every month their shitty magazine has some anti-Trump celeb on the cover as well.

Have you seen what cities are offering to lure the 2nd Amazon HQ? Delta could probably move for free

I don’t think they will, but let’s get real here

Well, in that case Delta shouldn't get special treatment like tax breaks.

Isn't that what is usually referred to as corporate welfare?

Yup. But the whole aviation industry is a lot of corporate welfare like that anyway. Every state has similar deals for regional hubs.

re: UPDATE: Georgia Senate Blocks Delta Tax Break
Delta has always enjoyed protection from GA.

For years, Southwest wanted in Atlanta but obviously Delta didn’t want them there to compete. So GA, through the airport authority, refused to sell gates to southwest. Basically told them that they would never be sold a gate. Ever. So Southwest got around that by buying AirTran for $1.4B, just to get their Gates in Atlanta.

Southwest was like okay, you won’t sell us gates then we’ll just buy a whole damn airline and take their gates. And that’s just what they did. Bought AirTran for the gates. Sold all AirTran planes (mostly to delta, funny enough, because delta needed more planes and wanted cheap used ones).
