Washington (Com)post article

The school is dropping these majors:

quote:

• American Studies
• Art – Graphic Design will continue as a distinct major
• English – English for teacher certification will continue
• French
• Geography
• Geoscience
• German
• History – Social Science for teacher certification will continue
• Music Literature
• Philosophy
• Political Science
• Sociology — Social Work major will continue
• Spanish

They realize they are losing money on these, most people with a lib arts degree end up nowhere, and the cost benefit is just not there. They instead will be doubling down on STEM programs. Of course, pr0g filth are angry at this and are going to be protesting on campus.

Damn. I’m out. I think it’s the University’s loss. I was an International Politics and Law major and a Russian history minor and I was eminently prepared to supersize every order.

I don't blame them.

Well, college isn't job training.

Philosophy may not be the most marketable degree, but I’d argue that some of the philosophy classes I took had the biggest influence on my development as a human being of any class.

Perfect. Geography and Geosciences aren't too bad but the other ones need to be minors or teacher certification only.

It’s the University’s choice but of course everyone is blaming the Walker Administration and Republican legislature.

I totally agree , my philosophy classes were giant in my career development, in the immediate post- college years.

Pimp: would you like to supersize that ?

Customer: frick off . More ketchup.

Pimp: Indeed, more ketchup. For wasn’t it Chrysippus who said that fate is a sempiternal thing...

I doubt they are canceling Philosophy class, but your greatest influence should be Jesus, not a college class.

Sounds like they just don't have a robust faculty. This is getting more and more common - most of these liberal arts people are frickwits and want no part of having to produce at a major university. So they avoid research, they avoid submitting manuscripts for publication. They're pathetic. They want to teach easy courses and work few hours, and bask in their liberal self-righteousness.

I hope people realize most of these college faculty work on an academic year appointment - so 9 months. They make around 80k or so, usually. Then if they can get funded, it's easy to get that additional 3 months of salary, especially if they teach one course during the summer. It's an easy gig for all but those looking to be top tier researchers at R1 universities.

How else does a university get rid of a bunch of shitty communists with tenure? “Oh, we’re sorry. If we still had your field of teaching, your tenure would apply. However, the department has been dissolved. You can use your tenure to scream at the sky instead. Thanks!”

From what I understand, they aren’t eliminating the courses entirely, they simply aren’t offering them as majors.

I have a degree in History and I found most of the students in the higher level classes to be very conservative. Maybe that's changed since 1999. I make a very good living but my line of work has zero to do with my degree.

Our progressive friends would prefer you use ‘STEAM programs’.

Geography

Depending on your track, this is basically a technology degree at most universities with the growth of GIS.
