quote:

The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only 12 years to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C and avoid catastrophic environmental breakdown.

quote:

What on earth are we doing? “All coral reefs would basically cease to exist at 2C, whereas at 1.5C there is a good chance of saving 10-30% of existing ecosystems.”

quote:

It means we lose coral, see massive die offs, highly acidic seas, and uninhabitable coastal areas. It is a few threads away from the complete unraveling of the planetary fabric that’s allowed humans to thrive.

quote:

We are slouching toward somewhere around 3 or 3.5C. That's probably not extinction-level, but it will cause enormous human suffering & irreversible changes that make the biosphere less welcoming to life. We could easily drive half of earth's other species to extinction.

quote:

It's no longer a question of if climate change will cause mass human deaths, but rather how many millions.

How much grant money do these scientists need to save us from this impending catastrophe?

The timing of this groundbreaking report right before US midterms isn’t suspect or anything

So go pressure China, India, etc. Once they get to where they're around our level of pollution we can talk about how we all can improve.

Al Gore said essentially the same thing in 2006, but he gave us 10 years (we passed that deadline 2 1/2 years ago).

This newest hysterical ultimatum will come and go, as well. We’ll survive. I guarantee it.

Darn you. You’re thread title has that REM song from the college days echoing in my head now, and I suspect it will all day long.

So. They're making a prediction.

When this prediction doesn't occur, are they going to do what science normally does if it makes a prediction that fails?

China is pretty bad but the US is in second place, not sure what you are trying to imply about India etc.

the whole thing is nonsense anyway

This.

Assuming EVERYTHING they claim is true (it's not, but the way, for any number of reasons), their "solutions" to essentially crater Western economies to "make up" for what China and India are doing is like patching a couple of pinholes on the port side of the Titanic and ignoring the gash on the starboard side.

I bet the Mayans and every other civilization said the same thing.

There’s no doubt that ocean acidification is a threat to the current ecosystem. But it’s impossible to accurately predict how far reaching the affects will be and how long it would take.

They should address this to the country responsible for more CO2 emissions than any other country.

quote:

China — which already emits more carbon from burning fossil fuels than the United States and Europe combined

Also, let's not forget that India's CO2 output is growing by about 6% per year.

But people here will freak the frick out, blaming the US (ie: Trump and Republicans) because it's more politically expedient (even though estimates remain 13%-14% below 2005's record output levels).

12 years exactly. We are fricked then. Millions of people dead, coastal cities destroyed, almost all coral gone.

Will it be like the giant wave in deep impact? How will the mass destruction occur? Will the coral weaponize and fight back?

What exactly do they do with all that money they receive? Do they use it just for research or do they actually spend some of that money on physical repairs of what they preach are deteriorating? If it is real, then quit spending money on the science part and actually start doing something about it showing us some concrete results such as taking all the research money and actually shoring up some coastlines in the Gulf as an example.
