More than any other platform, it is a vat of gasoline for the flames of misinformation.

The herd mentality of ignorant leftists there is legitimately dangerous, analogous to yelling fire in a theatre. Yes, the right has some, too, but the left is at least an order or magnitude worse simply due to celebrities and the media.

Facebook and IG at least have speed bumps in their effectiveness. Twitter is straight up dangerous.

Change my mind.

It’s bad on both sides. The 140 character limit just doesn’t lend itself to nuanced, well thought out post. Not that I agree buuuuttt I kinda see, to a small degree, why China places tough restrictions on twitter etc

Completely agree. Twitter is nothing but a cesspool of propaganda and misinformation.

The good news is I think more and more people are waking up to that reality.

Hardly anybody under 40 even uses Facebook.

Facebook is mostly middle-aged and old women.

And people selling pyramid scheme weightloss products.

While true, those are the most easily manipulated. You should see some of the nonsense my mother and Mother in law both believe because they see it on FB.

I think posts that end with the above should result in an auto-ban of at least 1 month for a first offense and permaban for a second.

It is a great aid to social engineers.

The definition of Social Engineering is:

the art of manipulating, influencing or deceiving one into taking action that is not in one's own best interest.

So yes, it can be a tool used for negative purposes, but this is like blaming guns for the acts of criminals.

since when? The govt has used millions of different regulations to control private business. Why are tech companies perceived to be above regulatory standards that every other private company are beholden to??

Misinformation has ALWAYS been a problem. When people lived days or weeks from the source of information, inaccurate data reached them just as much as accurate info ... and it had longer to “set” itself in the mind.

Sure, social media gives us MORE inaccurate data and faster, but we also have more and faster access to ACCURATE data.

At worst, comparison of accurate/inaccurate data now versus 200 years ago is a wash, but I think today nets-out better than our backwoods antecedents.
