Erdogan said, "Units of the Free Syrian Army, which are backed by Turkish armed forces, took control of the center of Afrin this morning." He added that a "large number" of Kurdish fighters had "fled with their tail between their legs," and that de-mining operations in the city are underway.

And oh shite, they have toppled the statues of Kawa!

Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army soldiers celebrate around a statue of Kawa, a mythology figure in Kurdish culture as they prepare to destroy it in city center of Afrin, northwestern Syria, early Sunday.
This phase of the war in Syria is just beginning. What does the US do now? Hopefully we will disengage and waste no more American lives in this region. Maybe the Kurds deserves their own country, but Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq all disagree. This is enough of a reason to get the hell out of there.

This leaves the Kurds with few choices:
1. Join forces with Assad to fight Turkey, accepting that they must remain a minority population within a Syrian state headed by Assad.
2. They must immediately declare independence from Syria AND Turkey, claim a large swath of Turkey, and challenge them to a fight for freedom.
Losing Afrin means number 2 is likely a losing proposition since Turkey has likely the most capable armed forces in the Middle East (Israel has the best air force). The Kurds will be forced to accept option 1.

Kawa is basically the Kurdish Jesus and is celebrated on March 21.
Wow and if you want to know about Kurdish Jesus, Kawa, here an excerpt explaining his victory over Dehak, the evil king.

Amazing how myths survive and are reshaped into religions that still influence the lives of otherwise intelligent people. And to think that we still fight to preserve these myths.
quote:
To this day, on the same Spring day every year, March 21st, (which is also Spring Equinox) Kurdish, Persian, Afghan and other people of the Middle East dance and leap through fires to remember Kawa and how he freed his people from tyranny and oppression and to celebrate the coming of the New Year. This day is called Newroz or New Day. It is one of the few ‘peoples celebrations’ that has survived and predates all the major religious festivals. Although celebrated by others, it is especially important for the Kurds as it is also the start of the Kurdish calendar and celebrates the Kurds own long struggle for freedom.
Wow and if you want to know about Kurdish Jesus, Kawa, here an excerpt explaining his victory over Dehak, the evil king.
quote:
The bucket of brains was then lifted by two strong guards and taken to the wicked Dehak and the brains fed to the hungry snakes. Since the snake king began his rule over the kingdom, the sun refused to shine. The farmer’s crops, trees and flowers withered. The giant watermelons that had grown there for centuries rotted. The peacocks and partridges that used to strut around the giant pomegranate trees had left. Even the eagles that had flown high in the mountain winds had gone. Now all was dark, cold and bleak. The people all over the land were very sad. Everyone became terrified of Dehak. They sang sad and sorrowful laments that expressed their pain and plight. And the haunting sound of a long wooden flute could always be heard echoing throughout the valleys. Now there lived below the king’s castle a blacksmith who made iron shoes for the famous wild horses of Mesopotamia and pots and pans for the people of the town. His name was Kawa. He and his wife were weakened by grief and hated Dehak as he had already taken 16 of their 17 children.

They will end up doing #1 but Assad isn't gonna mess with Turkey until ISIS, which is pretty much done, and the FSA and Syrian Al-Queda branch is beaten. Majority of Syrian troops are in Ghouta and Idlib regions fighting and don't have much else except for local tribes in other regions of Syria. Kurds main forces are still in Deir-Ezzoir and the branch they sent up to Afrin was from YPG and was mostly the Arab factions, maybe 10% Kurds.
The Kurds only chances to keep Afrin was Syrian gov't sending actual soldiers and not these small tribal forces to help, the U.S. helping, or the Peshmerga sending a large force from Iraq. None of those happened and YPG was pretty much annihilated over the last month from Turkeys air force bombing them.
Their best bet is to do what at some point the Peshmerga will do in Iraq, just join the actual government forces. TBH, Assad for the most part left the Kurds and Christians alone prior to the Civil War.
Eta: SDF not YPG, SDF is Arab and Kurd mixed

Like you said, it's their only option. The bloodshed may not be over either as they're probably gonna gear up to take Manbij next

The Turks were supposed to meet with Tillerson this week to form an agreement about Manbij and the YPG presence there. Of course, that is not going to happen since Pompeo still hasn't been confirmed.
Personally, I don't think the Kurds will ever get their desired independence. Too many enemies in the region. Their only friend is Israel and they won't do anything. Defending the Kurds at this point seems too risky.
quote:
The United States stations hundreds of troops in Manbij, where thousands of fighters of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) are also based. Turkey wants Washington to ensure the militants, which it labels as terrorists, return to positions east of the Euphrates river and has threatened to confront them in Manbij if the United States fails to implement its demands.

Reminds me of the left's infatuation with communism/socialism.

I am not a proponent of the left, communism or socialism. There is always middle ground between the far right and the far left. Mythology, on the other hand, can be a tax on rationality as we see with the Kurd's belief in Kawa.

The Kurds are going to lose Manbij soon if they don't chose choice 1. Two months ago Russia recommended choice 1 to them to avoid Turkey occupy Afrin. Kurds thought U.S. would stand with them to against Turkey invasion. No, Turkey is more immportant as an ally for us than Kurds.

Which is odd since Turkey did absolutely nothing to fight ISIS and has direct links to Al-Queda.

Turkey would be stupid to fight ISIS who is its agent. Most of ISIS's supplies went through Turkey and most of ISIS's crude oil sold to Turkey.

May as well move the rest of the Kurds to Nashville. I think they like the Harding corridor.

Maybe you can somehow relate your comment to the subject at hand instead of making a random irrational statement about socialism. Are you Kawa sensitive?

I had no idea that the Kurdish population was so large. Maybe spread them out over Wyoming, Nevada, and Utah.

The Kurds are the world's largest stateless ethnic group, with a population of approximately 30 million living across Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria.
