Trump’s Twitter Strategy ... elaborate maskirovka?
Posted by AggieHank86 on 8/19/18 at 10:42 am251
From “covfefe” to “councel,” Trump’s daily tweets are replete with APPARENT errors in spelling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation (among other things).
Trump opponents seize upon this “low hanging fruit” to argue that Trump is not a particularly bright man. His supporters respond that he is a highly-successful businessman and therefore must be reasonably-bright ... a very stable genius. While one might well question the “genius” assertion, there is certainly some merit to the premise that one does not build a huge real estate business with the IQ of a rhesus monkey.
If we accept the premise that Trump is brighter than the form of his tweets would lead one to believe, we are led to the conclusion that he is broadcasting these tweets with some sort of affirmative intent to create a false impression of sub-par intelligence.
One need not be a particularly astute observer to understand that some percentage of the SUBSTANCE of Trump’s tweeting constitutes “trolling,” intended to send his opponents chasing down pointless rabbit-trails like a pack of confused hunting hounds. As such, it is NOT INCONCEIVABLE that the apparent illiteracy displayed in this tweeting style might indeed also be a form of misdirection, perhaps intended to cause his opponents to underestimate his intelligence.
If we accept the premise that Trump’s tweeting style is a clever ruse, we must also accept the premise that Trump would (knowingly and intentionally) expose himself ... on a daily basis ... to constant ridicule as a functional illiterate.
Given what we know of Trump’s personality ... BOTH his hardball, calculating nature (which served him well in the business world) AND his long-known thin skin and alleged narcissism ...is this pattern of maskirovka actually a realistic possibility? That would TRULY be “playing 3-D chess.”

Is there any reason for you to use the Russian term “maskirovka”?
Literally every language has a word to describe being deceptive. Why pick the Russian word?
Why not just say is trumps twitter strat an elaborate deceptive game? Why use a Russian term that 99.99% of the people have never heard of?
Why the desperate attempt to tie trump to Russia? I’m sure Eisenhower would count punt you if you told him he utilized a Russian strategy with the phony invasion force used to trick the Germans pre dday

I am a Clancy fan. He uses the term with some regularity, and I picked it up there. It is hardly an obscure term, and I suspect that most college-educated folks are familiar with it.
Its meaning goes beyond “deception. It has elements of hiding the truth, but also elements of creating a plausible (but false) alternate story. Its use is a clear and concise means of conveying that broader concept.
I have been using it for probably 30 years.

Get over it, he is your President.
Because he believes that by using a Russian word his argument will be more convincing. Sort of like in the Manafort trial the mueller team was ordered to stop using the word oligarchy because of the negative connotations associated with it. They know there is not Russian collusion, so they have to play mind games with people. It’s sad that they’ve become this desperate.

We're this a left leaning site the OP would pick an obscure term from an even more obscure sub-Saharan matriarchal gatherer society.

i agree. it’s hard to imagine Trump is as dumb as he comes across. i’ve always suspected the misspelled tweets are intentional and a signal to the deplorable crowd that he’s more like them than a NY billionaire.

Says the dude who used a Russian term to try to tie trump to Russia. Come on man.

Mnhm. That’s fine and dandy. Doesn’t change the fact that you deliberately chose to use a Russian term that 99.99% of people have no idea wtf it means instead of simply using English. Or any other language that people could at least pick out a root/stem word and try to reason out what it means without jumping on google.

I can count the number of times I’ve heard the word said on one hand. Quite literally no one uses the word “maskirovka” in their daily gramatical repertoire.
No. One.

You are reading way too much into it. I bet he makes simple spelling errors and leaves them be, as a way to "speak plainly"
No one gives a hoot if he uses an E instead of an I. It does make people who keep crying about spelling seem like huge tools and disagreeable people. Keep being language police you tool.

I’d bet dollars to donuts if you polled 1000 people with MASTERS degrees or higher, less than 10% have ever heard of the word “maskirovka” and even fewer than that can tell you what it means.

Dude, you are seriously reading too much into word choice. I have REPEATEDLY said that the whole “collusion” narrative is utter nonsense. Run a site search with my name and “collusion.”
I used a word that is in common use in intelligence and military circles, to convey a concept in one word with more nuance than could be accomplished with any other single word.
Your argument is no different than the folks who get their panties in a bunch about “cisgender,” when the alternative would be “a person who is sexually attracted to persons of the opposite physical sex.”. Sure, one can convey the concept without the word “cisgender,” but it takes about 100 characters rather than 9. Same thing.

Seriously?
maskirovka?
It may be the same kind of """maskirovka""" Columbo used. It may be the same kind of """maskirovka""" W used to outdebate AnnRichards, AlGore, or JohnKerry. It may be the same kind of """maskirovka""" Trump and other developers use to outmaneuver competition.
But in America we normally don't refer to such things as elaborate maskirovka.
