...Bardole says he supports his president more today than he did when he cast a ballot for Trump in 2016, skeptical he would follow through on his promises.
"He does really seem to be fighting for us," Bardole says, "even if it feels like the two sides are throwing punches and we're in the middle, taking most of the hits."
Trump won the presidency by winning rural America, in part by pledging to use his business savvy and tough negotiating skills to take on China and put an end to trade practices that have hurt farmers for years. While the prolonged fight has been devastating to an already-struggling agriculture industry, there's little indication Trump is paying a political price. But there's a big potential upside if he can get a better deal — and little downside if he continues to get credit for trying for the farmers caught in the middle.

What do we export to China as far as foodstuffs other than Soybeans?

Trump is trying to diversify our trading partners.
Diversity is good.
The only people mad are the people that work for multinationals with manufacturing in China that want to sell back to the U.S. with no tariffs. Meanwhile China doesn't allow reciprocity but these same people are okay with it as long as they can make money off of U.S. decline.

The Swiss were going to build a nuclear power plant.
It was a serious eye sore though, no one wanted it, and so to make things more palatable they offered a bribe the community who took it.
No one bit.
After some thought, they went back to the public, and said this.
The power plant is necessary. And someone needs to make the sacrifice, and take it.
That changed everything. Communities competed for it as a matter of pride and duty.

Grow more cows, feed with corn, sell to Japanese. Profit.
Putting corn in cars is a crime. World is starving to death and we are literally burning food.

I don't think losing any percentage of that vote bodes well for trump

Juice, when even Romney and Schumer and Sanders are out there saying the trade war with China is necessary, you need to re-evaluate your opposition to it.
You need to go visit the towns up north that have been murered by the Chinese
It should outrage you as an American

I work with a wrought iron company here in Bham, the tariffs have caused prices to go up, but the guys understand
there is no bitching, the prevailing attitude is that this should have been done a long time ago

My son-in-law is a peanut, cotton & corn producer. Times are very hard no doubt on the farmer and he is 100% MAGA.

We're not planting 200 acres of soybeans that we had planned on. Stringing hot wires and running more cows this year. It's not ideal, or even positive, but we've never considered changing support for the President.

Very few counties in the swing states (WI, MI, PA, OH, NC, FL) flipped to Trump in 2016. Wisconsin is the notable exception, where he did convert rural areas...but was also a state that Clinton never once set foot inside.
However, what Trump was able to do in these states is convert suburban and urban voters towards him in higher numbers...
quote:
But the idea that Trump won because of a major surge in rural support may not hold up. Exit poll data said 25 percent of Trump's supporters said they live in cities of more than 50,000 residents. Contrast that with Clinton, who got 42 percent of her votes from cities.
Looking at suburbs, Trump got 53 percent of his votes there, while Clinton got only 46 percent. And rural areas were responsible for 22 percent of Trump's votes, but just 12 percent of Clinton's.
