Keep repeating that a tariff is a tax. You're clearly proud to know the one thing everyone else knows, and also apparently proud to not understand the other thing that everyone else knows.

You don't have to buy the merchandise. You do have to pay taxes.

so federal excise taxes on, say, alcohol or airline tickets aren't taxes?

the fact that it's a tax by definition is what really is causing all the panty-twisting

Reality is that all taxes are optional too, which is their sub talking point. Don't want to pay income tax, don't earn income!

"import tax" is a neutral and more precise descriptor

Isn't an "import tax" put on all goods imported into the country?

So all goods imported have "tarrifs" on them, correct?

not at all what I said

and more specifically

You don't have to buy the merchandise

from China

You don't have to buy alcohol

from China

from China

You do have to pay income, property, etc TAXES to the government. The OP, and yourself are being disingenuous saying Trump is raising taxes.

is a "sales tax" put on all goods sold in this country?

is an "income tax" put on all income earned in this country?

No, not all income is subject to tariff.

i'm just trying to follow your logic on why an import tax is not a tax, and quoting you

so let me see if i can restate what you're saying here. you've said that an import tax is not a tax because you don't have to import. an income tax, however, is a tax, even though you don't have to earn taxable income.

have i interpreted you incorrectly?

and would you answer regarding whether sales and excise taxes are in fact taxes as well, given that they tax optional transactions?

As long as higher minimum wages and regulations can be called taxes too...I’m good with tariffs being taxes.

So they aren't perfectly synonymous? Would you say they are imperfectly synonymous?

Right, which means the thread title is misleading. Thanks for wasting everyone's time with your bullshite straw man for multiple pages.
