President Trump’s top trade negotiator on Monday rolled out the administration’s strategy for renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a big campaign promise, while an announcement on new steel tariffs could be made in the coming days. Both moves would deliver on Trump’s promise to crack down on what he says are unfair trade practices.

Trump on Monday attended a splashy showcase of products from all 50 states at the White House. In one of several light-hearted moments, Trump climbed into a Wisconsin-made firetruck parked on the South Lawn.

This is going to be a fight.

30-40 years of entrenched trade policy is about to be challenged. 30-40 years of businesses and the banks that fund the same businesses of sucking America dry is about to be challenged. You think there has been opposition to Trump so far? You have seen nothing yet. It's going to get ugly when Trump starts fighting for American interest in earnest.

Get ready for MUH FREE TRADE, from the multinationals, big banks and corporate media. Trillions are at stake.

It is nearly August and you still think Trump is capable of making a pivot.

Well since he has already done so several times that would appear to be a sound assumption.

I know. Encouraging actual free trade is going to be labeled protectionism.

Your comment does not follow. It's out of context. At least read the link in the OP.

Free trade requires no third party. Only a buyer and seller.

When "free trade" is sold under the umbrella of government (the third party) some one is getting protected. Real free trade requires no government.

This is where Trump can win. Tax and trade reforms. Dems have no strategy or knowledge here. There are no heart strings to pull on about protecting American workers. He should've led wit tax and trade reforms to score wins early.

Trump is a protectionist with more than a soupcon of doberman.
If you have free trade companies will produce in lower cost regions.

Prescription drugs are a good example of corporate protectionism in the form of price discrimination:
quote:

-- Gleevec (a cancer treatment): $6,214 (per month/per customer) in the United States, compared to $1,141 in Canada and $2,697 in England.

-- Humira (for rheumatoid arthritis): $2,246 in the United States, compared to $881 in Switzerland and $1,102 in England.

-- Cymbalta (for depression): $194 in the United States, compared to $46 in England and $52 in the Netherlands. In fact, there is also a generic version of Cymbalta so these prices reflect having a cheaper alternative.

IDK if Trump can fix this problem.

Holy shite. The man has been in office less than 7 months and his administration has already won so much. Can America handle 4 straight years of nonstop winning?

Using today's political lexicon define what it means to be a protectionist and a free trader. What is the difference?

The true architects of the swamp. When the corporate lobbyists and politicians share a suite in the D.C. Brothel the selling out of America commences and the "true Americans " pay for their power plays.

behind the scenes. Yes it will be.

Low info voters will never know any of it happened, and fake news won't cover any if it.

Truth is, there is no free trade right now. Reagan never advocated for the idea that gov should never get involved.

He himself got involved. Free trade can only happen when the parties involved adhere to the rules.

Gov has always been in trade. Always. It's within the constitution. It's their job to make sure that other nations are trading fairly.

How will you impose tariffs without government? What about selling & buying from sanctioned countries? If Lockheed wanted to sell NK a dozen F-22s, who would prevent it without government? The stockholders?
