I have often said that with friends like Pakistan, who needs enemies?
The relationship is complex. They have helped the USA many times in the past, but have also allowed anti-US militants to take shelter in their country. But whoever is in charge of the country (Shahid Khaqan Abbasi - prime minister) must keep his Islamist militants in check or at least partially mollified.
From the USA's point of view we need to stay friendly, but not too friendly. Pakistan borders not only Afghanistan, but also Iran, China and India. The US does not want Chinese influence to prevail and neither do we want another Iran happening.
Abbasi, and the US leadership walk a highwire in keeping things from falling apart.
If the relationship slips off the knife's edge, it's unlikely to ever be repaired.
