The new mandates of requiring electronic logs for truckers is bullshite and is creating logistical nightmares for company's shipping out product. Freight costs are skyrocketing and supply of truckers willing to drive is getting lower. You're only allowed 14 hours on duty with 11 hours actual driving. Required 10 hours of continuos rest.

I understand not having paper logs and having truckers drive 20 hours straight no sleep. But they need to change the regulations where the 10 hours can be split up where the driver can rest while waiting to load/unload then get back on the road. Say he drives 8 hours then has to wait 4 hours to unload and get reloaded. He should be able to rest and then be able to drive back 6-7 more hours before requiring more rest.

I posted in another thread (I'll link it here later) and got downvoted to shite because apparently it's cool for truckers to charge $4.00 a mile and I'm an a-hole for saying that's too much

Here you go

preach.

Get ready for a bunch of idiots to tell you that "now looks like a good time to get into the industry."

I probably will close my terminal in Q2 if ELDs arent rescinded or if the enforcement isnt changed.

This is the benefit of having someone who has actually run a business himself as president.

Agree on ELDs.

Also, new silica regs are BS, too.

It's been an absolute nightmare trying to ship frozen catfish fillets across the country.

It's even worse for cattle farmers because the cows will die of heat exhaustion if you stop and there is no infrastructure for them to stop for rest and have a place to unload and keep the cows.

It's eliminating back hauling completely unless you're willing to pay 2 drivers for one truck. For example on catfish the trucker would load stocker size fish at 5am to haul 4-5 hours to Alabama to stock a farmers ponds, take an hour or so to unload, then go to another farm and load up food fish and haul them back here and get back at 10pm or so. He would sleep 6-7 hours then unload those fish at the processing plant and come get another load of stockers and do it all again. Now with the new rules he has to unload stockers and drive straight back here empty. It's causing rates to go up and a shortage of available trucks.

And I'm not even gonna get into the nightmare of shipping processed fillets all over the country. It's awful

Amen

I'm surprised this hasn't been addressed by this administration since I'm sure a large percentage of the construction industry is pro Trump.

The cost of ALL goods is about to skyrocket due to freight costs. The increased wages and savings from the tax cuts will be wiped out with inflation if these particular regulations aren't modified.

E logs are a very small part of the issue.

The bigger issue you hit on - how hours are calculated. That is where an adjustment needs to be made.

Right now my dad drives an empty tanker 1,200 miles drops it to be loaded and grabs an already loaded one to go back. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

No way 10 years ago a truck moved 2,400 miles only getting paid for 1,200. The per mile rates right now are really good for the trucking companies. Drivers aren’t seeing much of the benefit currently though.

I hate to say it but it sounds like a huge set-up to push for driver-less trucks. There's no comparing the two, but having new regulations to drive up the cost of trucking smacks of pushing for something the public would not initially be in favor of.

duh, they got those drivers locked in @ .59 cents a mile

however, companies are charging $3.90 a mile in some markets

$5.50 a mile in others -

and why not? There is a huge truck shortage and it's artificial for the most part. A bubble if you will, like the crypto currencies

My tinfoil hat theory is that it is to eliminate the 1099 tax status for independent contractors. If you quantify/compensate based on time rather than task, then it makes it an easier argument that O/Os are employees rather than contractors and then can be given a w2 and have earnings withheld and taxes paid by the company. drivers are notoriously bad for paying taxes.

I think that's the end game. These regs were an Obama administration idea and need to be repealed or modified. You can't put the trucking industry out of work. That's a shite ton of jobs lost if it were to go driverless.

I'm wondering if using refrigerated boxcars to haul catfish fillets by rail and then using trucks at city hubs to haul the product short distances would be cheaper. Apparently using intermodal freight you can haul 1 ton of freight 400 miles using only 1 gallon of diesel due to the sheer volume a train can haul, splitting the fixed costs with a lot of other loads.

No it isnt.
It just prevents shady companies from over-working their drivers and contractors by cooking the log books.

I foresee a big uptick in intermodal. Trains are far more efficent on longer hauls and judging by some of the truck rates I have seen, way cheaper.

There will likely always be a human in trucks. Security risks would be to high.

Also need to rescind the law stopping truck drivers from texting while driving. Freedom of choice. Let the drivers decide.
