President Donald Trump gave multiple car companies “the go ahead” on Twitter Sunday to mass produce ventilators to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

A senior White House official told the Daily Caller Sunday that Trump had now invoked the Defense Protection Act (DPA) “to ensure that the necessary authorities will be available to prioritize production of items under government contracts and to allocate scarce items where they are needed most.”

The official said Trump is using DPA to “drive the private-sector’s response to this crisis.”

A second official categorized the private sector’s response to the president’s call as “overwhelming” and “faster than anyone thought possible.”

quote:

“Ford, General Motors and Tesla are being given the go ahead to make ventilators and other metal products, FAST,” POTUS tweeted at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). “Go for it auto execs, lets see how good your are?”

God, what a nightmare, waking up to find yourself on a Ford ventilator...

Didn’t know car companies had vent building experiences..?

How much does a ventilator normally cost?

How much do you think automobile manufacturers will charge the government?

You can probably buy 3 Cadillacs for the price of 1 fast-tracked ventilator

I’d feel way more confident if Toyota was making the ventilators instead of Ford

Call me crazy but I wouldn't want a ventilator made by any of those three.

Let's get John Deere to crank out some ventilators.

How will this work? Their machine tools are designed to crank out automobile parts. Is it an easy conversion to ventilators?

Serious question, this isn't my area of expertise.

They'll be well built and offer features rivaling ventilators that are double the price.

The base models won't be too bad. The options is where they will make their money-- undercoating, pinstriping.

Good we are going to need them.

Separate but related question, I wonder how this will affect auto industry layoffs?
